What’s the Deal With Water in The Forever Winter?

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit, The Forever Winter has piqued my interest in an unusual way. The water mechanic is something new and intriguing that adds a layer of realism to the gameplay experience. However, it’s not without its challenges.

As a die-hard gamer of “The Forever Winter,” I recently got the chance to test out the latest build during a beta session. During this playtest, I stumbled upon an intriguing new aspect: Water. In the game’s desolate wasteland, water is indispensable. You need it to lure merchants and mercenaries to your base, but here’s the catch – it runs out. Once it does, your progress could be in jeopardy. Here are some key points about water in “The Forever Winter”:

How Does Water Work in The Forever Winter?

Above all, in addition to the riches scattered throughout the world that can be used for income, you’ll gather water from the deserted lands to support your settlement. Gathering water fills a reservoir, drawing merchants and soldiers. The merchants will offer you superior gear such as rigs and weapons. If you decide to play the game alone, the soldiers will accompany you on raids as AI companions, fighting by your side.

But there’s a catch, unfortunately. Your water depletes over time. It’s not a problem if you’re actively playing the game, but it also depletes in real time when you’re not playing. If you take a break from The Forever Winter to check out another game, you’ll return to find your water completely gone. If your water is gone, then the merchants and mercenaries leave.

Not only is it bad if your water runs out, but when it does, you stand to lose everything you’ve accumulated – all your gear and loot will disappear!

As indicated by Fun Dog Studios, the intention is to make players experience a sense of anxiety, regardless of whether they’re actually engaged in the game.

According to reports, the mechanic seems to offer some flexibility regarding time management. It’s mentioned that the reservoir can store enough water for a full month, and it can be filled up during several raids. So, if you prefer to play on weekends, you should have no issues in managing your time.

Will the Devs Change How Water Works?

At present, they have no plans to make changes. When questioned about this feature by players on Discord, they remained firm and mentioned potential tweaks to the amount of water you can gather in-game, but they are not considering altering the overall mechanic. This element is fundamental to the game; they aim for regular play to prevent losing everything.

It’s almost time to hop in-game. Here’s when you can play The Forever Winter on PC!
