The “Spirit of Yotei” is the eagerly awaited follow-up to “Ghost of Tsushima.” It will narrate the story of Atsu, a survivor who roams the Mount Yotei area seeking vengeance. Unlike “Ghost of Tsushima,” which unfolds in Tsushima, an island in western Japan, “Ghost of Yotei” is set centuries later during the Edo period in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost region.
As a gamer, I can’t wait for the upcoming DLC of Ghost of Yotei, which I hope will be as captivating and emotionally resonant as the Iki Island expansion from its predecessor. Just like how Jin returned to his father’s murder site in Iki Island, Atsu will likely face her own personal challenges in this new DLC that not only showcases visually stunning landscapes but also pushes her to her limits, fostering growth and delivering a powerful gaming experience for players.
The Possibilities of a DLC For Ghost of Yotei
Geographically speaking, Iki Island is situated quite near Tsushima Island, making it feasible for Jin to travel there. It’s speculated that “Ghost of Yotei” might feature downloadable content (DLC), possibly even larger than the Iki Island expansion seen in “Ghost of Tsushima.” The events of “Ghost of Yotei” are set to unfold in Hokkaido, which was known as Ezo during Japan’s Edo Period that began in 1603, the same year as the game’s setting. Hokkaido is the largest prefecture in Japan and the second-largest island within its archipelago.
Atsu’s adventure will unfold around Mount Yotei, situated in the southern part of Hokkaido. The spectral realm of Mount Yotei offers various scenarios for a downloadable content (DLC) akin to Iki Island. Since Hokkaido boasts numerous offshore islands, Atsu may explore other locations on the mainland as well. Interestingly, the DLC for Ghost of Yotei could also be set in Edo Japan, which lies south of Mount Yotei, or even extend to Honshu if the narrative calls for it.
Rebun and Rishiri Islands
An intriguing idea for a “Ghost of Yotei” DLC expansion could be the twin islands of Rebun and Rishiri, nestled off the western coast of Hokkaido. These islands are easily visible from one another. Notably, Rishiri Island is characterized by a towering volcano, which could serve as an ominous reflection of Mount Yotei, offering developers an opportunity to craft a DLC that subtly echoes Atsu’s character development on the mainland. The island of Rishiri would offer an ideal backdrop for a climactic showdown, enabling Atsu to face her past and grapple with the person she has become in her pursuit of vengeance.
Instead of Rishiri Island’s prominent volcano, Rebun Island is significantly smaller yet boasts breathtaking cliffs and an extraordinary array of rare and stunning alpine blooms, earning it the nickname “island of flowers.” Today, Atsumon serves as Rebun Island’s official mascot, a name reminiscent of the Ghost of Yotei’s Atsu. The Ainu people inhabited Rebun Island during the start of the Edo period, offering visitors more chances to immerse themselves in Ainu culture, especially on this smaller island.
As a game enthusiast, I’d love to explore the idea of a DLC set on Japan’s main island, Honshu. The prefectures of Aomori and Akita, nestled near Hokkaido’s south, could offer a captivating glimpse into Edo Japan. However, this might divert from the depiction of the Ainu culture that Sucker Punch seems to be focusing on, making it less probable. Yet, it’s not entirely out of the question, especially if it drives my character forward, promoting growth, particularly in the later stages of the game. This could also open up intriguing avenues for a captivating side story.
