The latest update to PEAK introduces an even stranger challenge! Instead of focusing on climbing or surviving the elements, you now need to cook and eat a screaming plant called a Mandrake to earn the Cryptogastronomy Badge. This guide will show you exactly how to find, prepare, and safely consume a Mandrake to get your badge in PEAK.
Where To Find a Mandrake in PEAK
To start, you’ll need to find a Mandrake. You can find it in the Roots biome, which was added with the Roots update. Right now, until November 17, 2025, the Roots biome always appears after the Shore, making it the perfect time to search for Mandrakes before it starts appearing alongside the Tropics biome.
When you reach the Roots area in PEAK, look among the bushes and dirt for Medicinal Roots. These orange, plant-like items grow in groups and are used to restore health. Sometimes, instead of a root, you’ll find a Mandrake. It looks very similar, but it has a face and will start screaming right away when you pick it up.
Mandrake screams can make anyone nearby feel incredibly sleepy, potentially causing them to faint. This affects you and your allies as well.
How to Cook and Eat a Mandrake in PEAK
After obtaining a Mandrake, you’ll need to cook it. A Portable Stove, often found in the Shore area, is the simplest and safest way to do this. It allows you to cook whenever and wherever you are.
Okay, so if you’re going for that badge in PEAK, seriously, bring a Portable Stove. It makes things SO much easier. If you forget it, though, you’re gonna have to haul a Mandrake all the way to a campfire, and fast! Campfires are usually up high on the map or near those checkpoint things. Just watch out – don’t drop the Mandrake, and definitely don’t pass out before you get there!
Once you’ve found a safe place to cook, put the Mandrake on the stove or campfire. After it’s cooked, eat it to immediately earn the Cryptogastronomy Badge.
Once you earn the badge and finish your climb, you’ll get the Sprout Hat! This cute, leafy hat is your reward for completing the Cryptogastronomy Badge challenge.
