Where to Find and Use All Keys in Scott Pilgrim EX

Scott Pilgrim EX is a new beat ‘em up game based on the popular world created by Bryan Lee O’Malley, and it’s been a huge success. It features an original story with alternate timelines and plenty of surprises.

This new game isn’t as simple to play as the original Scott Pilgrim vs. The World game. You won’t follow a set path – instead, you’ll be able to explore and switch between different timelines, meaning you might need to revisit areas. This allows the developers to fill each level with lots of hidden details and secrets for players to find.

The game features several locked doors hidden around the map. You’ll need Golden Keys to open them, and these keys are hidden inside certain objects within each level.

As a huge Scott Pilgrim EX fan, I know how easy it is to miss those Golden Keys – some are hidden in things you’d never think to break! If you’re like me and want to find everything the game has to offer, you really need a guide. That’s why I’m so glad this one exists! It shows you exactly where every Golden Key is hidden, and more importantly, where to find the doors they open. It’s a total lifesaver for completionists like me!

As a player, I’ve been trying to figure out these hidden items – whether it’s to make some extra gold doing side stuff or to finally beat the big bad boss! Here’s a breakdown of everything I’ve learned about them.

All Golden Key Locations in Scott Pilgrim EX

The Golden Key #1

You can find the first Golden Key very early in the game at the Movie Studio. It’s available as soon as you start Chapter 2: On the Beach, so all you need to do is complete Chapter 1: Metal Scott Underground, which acts as the game’s tutorial.

Once you’re inside the Movie Studio, go through the parking entrance to reach the movie set area. You’ll find Envy and the dressing room back there. Walk all the way to the right until you see a wooden table – break it open to discover the first Golden Key from the Scott Pilgrim experience.

The Golden Key #2

You can find the second Golden Key fairly early on, starting at the beginning of Chapter 2: On the Beach. It’s located in Downtown, which means heading to the right side of the map. You’ll need to go past the blocked subway – you can get through by jumping onto the crates and barrels inside.

When you get to the Downtown area, with all the local shops, head towards the right side until you see a single blue mailbox. It’s located directly in front of Chompers Drug Mart. Break the mailbox open to find your second Golden Key!

The Golden Key #3

You’ll find the third Golden Key as you progress in the story, specifically starting in Chapter 3: The Hidden Castle, once you unlock the Casa Vania location. To reach it, look for a portal in the Suburbs – the neighborhood with Stephen Still’s and Wallace’s houses.

As soon as you enter the castle’s main hall, you’ll notice some wooden benches. Look to your left – there’s a green book resting on one of them. That’s where the Golden Key is hidden! You’ll need to break the bench to get it.

The Golden Key #4

To find the fourth Golden Key, you’ll need to progress to Chapter 5: Back to School. Then, unlock the No-Account Video store in the Shopping Area by purchasing the final item. This will give you access to the School.

Go inside and make your way to the second floor, defeating any enemies you encounter. Once there, look for a garbage can on the far left side, right next to the stairs. Break it open, and you’ll find the Golden Key!

The Golden Key #5

To continue the main story and reach Chapter 6, “The Great Lord Burger,” you absolutely need to find the fifth Golden Key. It’s essential because it unlocks the fight against the main boss, The Great Lord Burger.

Go back to Casa Vania and head straight for the castle. Once inside, go to the cemetery area to the left of the entrance hall. In the center, you’ll find a single gravestone – break it to get the item. Be warned: breaking the gravestone will cause enemies to appear, but defeat them to claim the Golden Key!

The Golden Key #6

You’ll find the sixth Golden Key at the VPD Headquarters, but you can’t get there until Chapter 10, “The Lucky Mic.” You need to progress far enough in the game to destroy the car that’s blocking the entrance before you can access it.

Go to the far right side of the VPD Headquarters. You’ll find a stack of two cardboard boxes – break them open to discover the Golden Key hidden inside.

The Golden Key #7

The last of the seven Golden Keys can be found at Lee’s Place, but you can only reach it during the final chapter, Chapter 12: The Grand Finale.

You can find it tucked away in an alley within the Wastelands – that’s the area right before you fight the last boss. The entrance is between the Nihon Sushi and Final Cup shops. Once inside, search around for some barrels; the Golden Key is hidden inside one of them.

Where to Use the Golden Keys

In the Shopping Area

In Chapter 2: On the Beach, go to the Shopping Area – it’s the main place to buy things. Look for a locked door to the left of the entrance to High Park.

Unlock the Seventh Eleven bar by holding your Golden Key and pressing the button near the door. This secret area lets you try the “Roll the Die” side quest, which is a great way to earn extra money because you can repeat it as many times as you like.

In the High Park

As soon as you enter High Park – through the shopping area and past Julie Powers’ store – you’ll find a small, locked castle door. Opening it starts a chest game that refreshes periodically. You choose one of three chests to win a random prize, like coins, health points, or gold points.

Inside the School

To complete this step, you need to progress to Chapter 5: Back to School. Then, enter the School through the No-Account Video store by repeatedly purchasing the final item available there.

Once you’re in the school, head to the first floor and find Simon Lee in the cafeteria. Look for a locked door in the hallway – use the Golden Key to open it and enter the Dojo. Inside, you’ll find Simon Lee again, who will offer you the “Hell of Fighting 96 Guys” side quest. This tough challenge requires you to defeat 96 vegan opponents consecutively, but if you succeed, you’ll earn a lot of coins and a power-up.

In the Medieval Fort

This is the only locked door blocking your progress in the main story of Scott Pilgrim EX – you’ll need to unlock it to continue.

You’ll find a locked door with a “Burger” sign above it at the beginning of Chapter 6, “The Great Lord Burger.” Opening this door lets you challenge The Great Lord Burger, one of the game’s required bosses.

Inside the VPD Headquarters

The VPD Headquarters has two locked doors. You can only reach this location after completing Chapter 10: The Lucky Mic, and defeating the upgraded Vegan Van parked outside.

Go inside VPD HQ and follow the main corridor to the left. You’ll find an exit that leads to an area with two cells – Jimmy will be nearby. Each cell needs a Golden Key to open, and unlocking them will trigger tough enemies to appear. If you defeat these enemies, you’ll be rewarded with valuable chests.
