In the world of Elden Ring, Nightreign’s Forging Stones are essential for upgrading your weapons. However, unlike previous games, obtaining these stones follows a unique process that you might not be accustomed to. Basic stones can be found in various spots, but higher-tier stones for more powerful weapons only appear in specific areas where they drop. It’s important to note that there is no upgrade stone beyond the Smithing Stone 2. To reach a weapon’s full potential, you will need a substantial amount of these stones.
Our guide on Elden Ring offers insights into upgrading your weapons and locating the two types of Smithing Stones. Additionally, we provide directions for the initial destination you should visit in the game.

Smithing Stones with a brownish tint can occasionally be obtained from defeated enemies or found hidden in chests, but you also have the option of purchasing them for 6,000 Runes from merchants scattered across the map. These merchants are typically located near castles and at certain campsites. To identify their locations, use the “overview” function on your map. A figure with a hood signifies a merchant’s proximity.
In simpler terms, only the Fundamental Blacksmithing Stones are suitable for creating fundamental weapons – these include your initial weapon and any other weapon with a gray name card background. It’s advisable to procure Standard Blacksmithing Stones when necessary. These stones are not useful for anything beyond basic weapons, so there’s no advantage in hoarding them. For more advanced crafting, you’ll require Blacksmithing Stone 2, and those are harder to find.

In various mines, Smithing Stone 2 can be obtained from vanquishing minor bosses. These mine bosses could be a cave troll close to an inner platform, several Redmane Knights, or a peculiar monster with a pumpkin head. Upon defeating the boss, they will drop an item that offers you a choice between Smithing Stone 2, a weapon, or a passive ability enhancement. Generally, it’s better to opt for the Smithing Stone 2 in most situations, unless your alternative is the perfect weapon for your character’s specific build.
Occasionally, powerful foes out on the battlefield might drop a Smithing Stone 2 among their loot, but these instances are relatively rare.
To elevate a weapon from common to rare or acquire a +2 purple status, it requires 2 Smithing Stones. To achieve a legendary status or +3 gold status, an additional 2 stones are needed. To bring an armament to the legendary status by defeating mine bosses, you’ll need to vanquish three of them. In most cases, you can only fully upgrade one weapon at a time due to time constraints. It’s usually more beneficial to enhance your other weapons up to +1 or +2 instead of solely focusing on a single powerful choice for the Night Lord battle, as it ensures a stronger arsenal overall.

When you’ve gathered the essential items, locate a merchant by using the map overlay to identify their locations. Each merchant will have a smithing anvil nearby, which you can use at no cost. Keep in mind that only weapons that are not of legendary class can be enhanced. However, most starting weapons cannot be upgraded beyond +2.
