To succeed in MIO: Memories in Orbit, focus on finding upgrades. As a Metroidvania game, improving your abilities is key, and in MIO, these improvements are called Modifications.
You can get upgrades, called mods, in a couple of ways. You can buy them from Mel, a robot shopkeeper who gets more items as you play, or you can discover them while exploring the game world.
This guide highlights the best character modifications (mods) to use when you first start the game. Since it’s newly released, these mods can give you a helpful boost during the initial hours of gameplay with MIO.
If you’re having trouble with Monster Hunter Online or want to improve your gameplay, stay tuned! I’ll guide you through the best mods to use and where to download them.
What Are Modifications?

Mods are how you make your character stronger in the game. You’ll find permanent upgrades like the Hairpin, which lets you grapple, and Striders, which allow you to climb walls, but these work a little differently than other upgrades.
Modifications are improvements you can add and remove, and the number you can use is limited by your available space. You can increase this space using Modifier Extensions.
It’s not just about locating Modifications; you also need a Network Gate to switch them. Check your map to find the nearest one.
Starting Modifications
The game begins with a single upgrade called Self-Awareness. This lets you view your own health and current status.
It comes standard, but you can remove it if you’d like to focus on other aspects of your build. While helpful, it’s easily replaced if you’d rather prioritize healing or dealing damage.
Self-awareness provides valuable insights, so it’s generally a good idea to keep it active and use it in most situations.
Protective Overlay
As a player, I’m telling you, the Protective Overlay is a lifesaver! It basically gives you an extra hit point, which means you can survive one more attack before going down. It’s a really important upgrade, and the best part is, you can get it pretty early in the game!
At the very end of the map, in an area called the Dwellings, you’ll discover a locked chest. All you need to do to open it is defeat the enemies that attack you.
Once you’ve won all the battles, the chest will open. Open it to get Protective Overlay and add it to your collection of items.
Kinetic Thrust
The Kinetic Thrust modification is essential for success in MIO. It boosts the damage of the final attack in your combo, which is especially helpful when finishing off tough bosses and dealing the last bit of damage. You’ll appreciate having that extra power when you’re trying to defeat them!
It’s pretty easy to find! Just start at the beginning of the map and follow the main path all the way around – you’ll discover a hidden alcove.
Hidden inside is Kinetic Thrust. Grab it and add it to your matrix ASAP.
Analyzer
The Analyzer might look simple, but it’s a key tool in MIO. It shows you how much health enemies have, and crucially, it displays the health of bosses.

Okay, so to grab the Analyzer, you just head to the spot marked on the map. Once you get there, you’ll find a door that was previously blocked – but now I can open it from this side. Pretty cool, right?
Rad, a cute little robot, is really grateful for your help with doors, so he’s giving you Analyzer as a free gift! He’s a sweetheart.
Maintenance Hack
The Maintenance Hack is an upgrade you can purchase early in the game from Mel, a robot shopkeeper. It’s a key item that helps you explore the MIO facility.
Throughout the world of MIO, you’ll find basins that restore your health, usually by spending a currency called Nacre. However, with the Maintenance Hack, healing becomes completely free, making it very easy to stay alive.
After you find Mel, definitely purchase this fantastic Modification. It’s a worthwhile investment that will save you money over time.
