Okay, so in Hytale, once you’ve moved past Copper and Iron, you’ll start working with Thorium. It’s one of the mid-game ores, and honestly, it’s a big step up. Gear made from Thorium is better in pretty much every way, but it takes a bit more effort to craft because the ore itself is a little tricky to work with. You really have to get the hang of it!

Finding Thorium in Hytale is usually pretty easy, as it’s abundant. However, you’ll need to know the right places to search and what to look for. This guide will show you the best methods for collecting Thorium and offer helpful tips to speed things up.

Hytale Thorium Locations

Thorium is found in desert areas on the map. Since each world in Hytale’s Exploration Mode is randomly created, it’s difficult to say exactly where it will be. We discovered a large desert biome south of where you begin the game.

When you’re exploring a desert, keep an eye out for caves that go underground. These caves vary in depth – some are small, while others are deep. Once underground, you can find Thorium just like you find other ores like Copper and Iron.

Desert caves hidden underground are riskier than the caves you find at the beginning of the game. You’ll encounter more types of enemies here, like Goblins, Desert Skeletons, and Skaraks – big, underground insects that can attack suddenly. These Skaraks can be especially dangerous, potentially knocking you off cliffs if you’re not careful.

Thorium doesn’t seem to generate in savannah areas. If you’re looking for it, check caves located further within desert biomes.

Underground Exploration & Mining Tips

  • Before going underground, always bring a big stack of torches and ladders as well as a few sign boards. These will help you navigate caves while leaving behind tracks that will make future visits easier.
  • Bring a bucket of water or two. You can use these to create water elevators that are very handy for going up and down chasms.
  • Crouching prevents you from accidentally moving off of ledges. You can use this to carefully make bridges across large gaps.

What is Thorium For?

Currently in Hytale, Thorium is primarily used to create better equipment and improve workbenches. It’s often combined with Venom Sacs, which are obtained by defeating poisonous creatures such as snakes, spiders, and the large flying insects found in desert areas.

Thorium Ingots can be used to create keys that unlock the Ancient Gateway. These gateways lead to different areas within Orbis, though these areas are still under development and aren’t fully available in the current early access version of the game.
