Where’s the L3 and R3 on PS5?

On a PlayStation 5 controller, many buttons are clearly identified, yet not all inputs have such clarity. While veterans of gaming might instinctively locate the L3 and R3 buttons, these may perplex younger or less experienced players when instructed to press them.

As a gamer, I’ve often found myself puzzled by the button symbols in games, particularly L3 and R3 which are usually represented as black circles with labels. It can be tricky to figure out what these mean until you get familiar with the layout of a PlayStation 5 controller. Before that, they might not be much help at all.

Where to Find the L3 and R3 Buttons on a PlayStation Controller

The L3 (Right) and R3 (Left) buttons on a PlayStation 5 controller are situated right under the left and right analog sticks. By positioning your thumbs at their centers, you can gently press down to activate these buttons without moving the sticks. It might require some practice initially to avoid unintentional movements, but with time, using the L3 and R3 buttons should feel as natural as second nature.

19 buttons in total can be found on a PS5 controller, with the L3 and R3 buttons included. The top and backside of the DualSense houses the L1, L2, R1, and R2 buttons, while the directional buttons (up, down, left, and right) are positioned on its left side. The main face buttons (X, Circle, Triangle, and Square) reside on the controller’s right side, and the Create and Options buttons, also known as Share and Start to some veteran gamers, can be found on the left and right sides of the touchpad respectively.

Talking about the touch pad, it functions similarly to the left and right joysticks by being pressed down, adding another button on the PS5’s DualSense controller. Notably, the PlayStation and mute buttons are positioned between the two joysticks, just below the small openings for the controller’s microphone and speaker. The PlayStation button opens the system menu, while the mute button silences the player’s microphone.
