As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel a glimmer of anticipation about the possibility of Injustice 3. Though an official announcement is yet to be made, the creative brilliance demonstrated by NetherRealm Studios in the development of the Injustice franchise has left many of us eagerly hoping for more. The prospect of another installment continues to fuel our hopes and keep the flame of excitement burning bright.
Given their history with the long-running “Mortal Kombat” series, NetherRealm Studios often incorporates iconic characters from this franchise into their “Injustice” games. Known for their creative crossovers, even their latest game, “Mortal Kombat 1,” includes figures like Conan the Barbarian and Ghostface among its fighters. Given that such crossovers have become a tradition with NetherRealm, it wouldn’t be unexpected to see more Mortal Kombat characters in “Injustice 3.
If Injustice 3 Introduces More Mortal Kombat Characters, NetherRealm Will Have to Choose Wisely
Injustice 2’s Controversial Double Dose of Mortal Kombat
Although many players appreciated the presence of Mortal Kombat characters in Injustice, there was still debate about Injustice 2 having two characters instead of one like the previous game. The first Injustice introduced Scorpion, whereas Injustice 2 included both Sub-Zero and Raiden. The main criticism of the additional Mortal Kombat content was that it filled up two character slots, leaving some players wishing for a new crossover option instead. Regardless of the controversy, there are several potential choices for Injustice 3 to feature as its Mortal Kombat offering.
2017 saw the arrival of “Injustice 2”, marking an eight-year gap since the previous installment in the franchise for me, a devoted fan.
Liu Kang
In the revamped storyline of Mortal Kombat 1, Liu Kang now plays a pivotal character. When he seized the Hourglass, he reset history, initiating a new chapter for the Mortal Kombat franchise. This soft reboot brought an exciting twist to the series, making Mortal Kombat 1 feel novel and intriguing. Given his significance in this fresh timeline, it’s not unforeseen that Liu Kang could appear in Injustice 3.
Johnny Cage
Johnny Cage, a beloved character, appears to be another great pick for Injustice 3. Known for his action-hero persona and outsized ego, Johnny Cage offers a comical clash against the divine powers wielded by many characters in Mortal Kombat. The superhero-centric theme of Injustice could effortlessly accommodate this amusing contrast once more. Watching Johnny engage in battles with heroes such as Superman or Wonder Woman promises to be an entertaining spectacle.
In the forthcoming “Mortal Kombat” sequel, the role of Johnny Cage will be taken up by Karl Urban. This action-packed movie is scheduled for release in theaters on October 24, 2025.
Shao Kahn
Shao Kahn, with his massive physique, distinctive look, and significant impact on the “Mortal Kombat” series, has been one of its most memorable adversaries. Introducing him as the primary antagonist in “Injustice 3” could add an exciting twist for players. Any character from this fighting franchise would be intriguing to see in “Injustice 3,” but Shao Kahn’s long-standing role as a powerful villain might make a compelling decision.
Right Now, Injustice 3 Remains a Mystery
As an ardent fan, I haven’t received any formal update from NetherRealm about Injustice 3 yet, but there might be some promising news on the horizon. Recently, DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have had conversations with both NetherRealm and Rocksteady regarding potential future game projects. While this doesn’t guarantee a third game, it certainly gives us fans something to look forward to. If their new DC cinematic universe resonates with audiences, it could potentially open doors for a fresh Injustice game. Fingers crossed!
