Today’s consoles are capable of stunning graphics – either in 4K resolution or with fast framerates, but usually not both at the same time. That’s true for The Outer Worlds 2 as well. To give players options, the developers at Obsidian have added a ‘Visual Mode’ setting. But what do these different visual modes actually do on your console? This guide will explain all the visual modes available in The Outer Worlds 2 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S, helping you choose the settings that look best to you.
All Visual Modes in The Outer Worlds 2, Explained
In The Outer Worlds 2, you can choose from three graphics settings: Performance, Quality, and Balanced. Quality mode focuses on sharper visuals but might lower the game’s framerate. Performance mode aims for smooth gameplay with higher framerates. Balanced mode tries to offer a good mix of both visual fidelity and performance.
In The Outer Worlds 2, this is what you’re getting in each visual mode for each console.
| Console | Performance Mode | Balanced | Quality Mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | 60 FPS | Dynamic Resolution (max 1280p, lows of 848p, upscales to 1800p) | 40 FPS | Dynamic resolution (max 1440p, lows of 1280p, upscales to 4K) | 30 FPS | Dynamic resolution (max 1600p, lows of 1440p, upscales to 4k) |
| Xbox Series S | Not supported | 40 FPS | Dynamic resolution (max 900p, lows 720p, upscales to 1440p) | 30 FPS | Dynamic resolution (max 1080p, lows 720p, upscales to 1440p) |
| PS5 Pro | 60 FPS | 1620p resolution | 40 FPS | 4K resolution | 30 FPS | 4K resolution |
| Base PS5 | Not supported | 40 FPS | 4K resolution | 30 FPS | 4K resolution |
The PC version of The Outer Worlds 2 lets you adjust the graphics settings in a lot more detail, so you can optimize the game to work perfectly with your computer’s hardware.
Which The Outer Worlds 2 Visual Mode Should You Use?
What do you prefer?
Okay, so which mode should you pick? Honestly, it really comes down to what you like. If you’re a stickler for how good a game looks and want the prettiest graphics possible, definitely go with quality mode. But if you care more about smooth gameplay and a high framerate, and don’t mind sacrificing some visual details, then performance mode is the way to go for me.
I’ve found that Balanced mode offers the best experience. It runs at 40 frames per second, which makes gameplay much smoother than Quality mode, while still looking good. While the game isn’t unattractive, it’s not pushing the boundaries of realistic graphics. Because of this, you can comfortably switch to Performance mode on PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X without noticing a significant drop in visual quality.
It’s a bit unexpected that the standard PS5 doesn’t have a performance mode. However, even without it, the base PS5 runs games very well, and The Outer Worlds 2 isn’t a particularly demanding game visually.
