Romance in GreedFall: The Dying World functions similarly to other role-playing games, relying on an approval system with your companions. Your choices during conversations, quests, and special dialogues with each character will either increase or decrease their opinion of Vriden Gerr.
Okay, so if you’re trying to romance someone in the game, you really need to get on their good side and follow their personal story. Keep an eye out for a little heart icon that pops up during chats – that means what you say can actually change how much they like you! Out of all the companions, you can actually romance four of them: Nilan, Ludwig, Alvida, and Sybille. Just a heads-up, once you pick one, you’re kinda locked in, but you can end things before you go all-in.
Romanceable Companions

After you build a strong enough relationship, four of your companions will be open to a romance with Vriden Gerr. Importantly, any Vriden Gerr, regardless of their gender, can be romanced by any of these four companions.
| Companion | Romance Tips |
|---|---|
| Nilan | Side with native interests, respect Doneigad traditions, don’t defer to colonial authority, and hearken back to your shared childhood where possible. |
| Ludwig | Back the dispossessed, make pragmatic choices, avoid performative heroism. |
| Sybille | Talk or sneak past confrontations, let her handle enemies diplomatically, don’t be clingy. |
| Alvida | Show solidarity, stand up for people in trouble, draw parallels between your cultures, and in her quest, err on the pro-family side rather than anti-family. It’ll make sense when you reach those points. Defer to her. |
When you unlock the option to pursue a romantic relationship with a character, you’ll clearly see choices that let you accept or reject their advances.
Once you establish a romantic connection, you’ll get to see a private scene in your cabin, and Vriden Gerr will officially be in a relationship with that character. But don’t worry, you can always end the relationship by talking to them later.

Once you reach endgame, however, the option to break up with your chosen love disappears!
Romance Tips
- Bring them along! You can only have three companions in your active party at a time. If you want to raise approval with someone, they need to be with you. Situations play out differently depending on who is present, and being there for key moments matters.
- Check in regularly. After major story beats, speak to your companions at camp. New dialogue, sometimes marked with a heart, becomes available as the story progresses and cannot always be revisited.
- Dialogue tabs marked with hearts will often lead to platonic conversations, and you can have them with non-romanceable characters! Don’t avoid them simply because they are noted with hearts. Even with romanceable characters, you can always steer things in a more friendly direction if you want to build approval without committing romantically.
- Personal quests are essential! Each romanceable companion has a questline that must progress before the romance can fully develop. Completing their quests – and making the right choices within them – is the primary driver of approval.
