The following contains spoilers for
Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
.

In the world of The Legend of Zelda series, which began in 1987, Ganondorf is frequently portrayed as the main adversary. However, it’s important to note that he isn’t the only one who has taken on this role. Characters like Demise from Skyward Sword, Vaati from The Minish Cap, and Zant from Twilight Princess have also filled this position throughout the series. The upcoming game, Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, adds to this roster by introducing a fresh antagonist named Null. Despite this, players will still encounter Ganon in various parts of the storyline during gameplay.

In “Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom,” the main antagonist, Null, doesn’t show up until the latter part of the game narrative. This is when Zelda embarks on journeys to locations such as the Faron Wetlands and Eldin Volcano, aiming to heal the rifts in those areas. Interestingly, it’s only after Zelda defeats Ganon that Null makes an appearance. At this stage, details about the adversary are scarce, yet Zelda and her comrades persist in revealing its identity. As it transpires, Null is not a typical villain; instead, its role within the “Zelda” universe indicates its significant relevance to the broader storyline.

Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom’s Null Explained

Like Skyward Sword’s Demise, Null Is One of The Legend of Zelda’s Overarching Antagonists

In a nutshell, the villain Null from Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom shares a significant trait with Demise from Skyward Sword, as they are both major antagonists in The Legend of Zelda series. Notably, unlike Ganon who has been the primary antagonist in most Zelda games, Null’s significance extends beyond individual titles and even predates them, appearing before the start of The Legend of Zelda itself – a point that makes Null a unique antagonist for the entire series. In comparison, Demise reappears in Skyward Sword, which until then was considered the first game in the series timeline. This leaves room for the possibility that the series could delve even deeper into its past.

Null Existed in the Void Before the Creation of the World

After conquering a particular area within “Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom”, the deity Nayru narrates to Zelda the origin tale of Null. Prior to the emergence of our world, there was merely a boundless emptiness. Within this void, life forms would occasionally appear, but they were quickly consumed by a being who inhabited the void – whom we later learn is called Null. Greedy and ambitious, Null aimed to possess all existence indiscriminately. To prevent such destruction, the three goddesses fashioned “the heavens and the earth” as a means to confine Null.

Unfortunately, Null started relentlessly tearing open rifts in Hyrule with the aim of swallowing it into oblivion once more. In response, the goddesses forged Tris, imbuing her with the power to heal these rifts. This is where Zelda’s ally Tri originates from, bestowing the princess with her Tri Rod at the onset of the story in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. With this rod, she can create echoes of items and creatures across Hyrule.

As the tale unfolds within the game, Zelda and Tri dedicate every effort to sealing the fissures on Hyrule’s landscape and rescuing those who have been taken captive.

The intriguing aspect of the creation tale in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is that it implies Hyrule was not just made as a residence, but more like a detention center for Null. This twist significantly alters key elements of Zelda folklore that fans have grown accustomed to over the years, yet it also enriches it in ways it never had before. It’s exciting to speculate whether future games will reference Null as a major adversary across the series or if this entity reappears again.
