Why 2025 is the Perfect Time for a Twisted Metal Comeback

As a lifelong fan who grew up with the thunderous roars of Twisted Metal echoing through my childhood, I can’t help but feel a twinge of excitement at the prospect of this iconic franchise making its triumphant return in 2025. I remember the days when my friends and I would huddle around the TV, our eyes glued to the screen as we watched Sweet Tooth tear through metal mayhem. The thought that we might once again feel that adrenaline rush is almost too much to bear!

In days gone by, Twisted Metal was one of Sony’s most thrilling franchises. This high-octane, metal-based vehicular combat series was brimming with raw, explosive energy and showcased a fearless, unapologetic spirit that kept players on the edge of their seats. Regrettably, while Twisted Metal occupies a significant place in the pantheon of destructive racing games, it has largely fallen into a state of dormancy today.

In simpler terms, the modern representation of this series is found in Peacock’s Twisted Metal TV show, which, although receiving mixed feedback, plans to continue with a second season. This could potentially spark renewed interest in the franchise. The TV show primarily focuses on the limited storyline of the games and less so on the chaotic and exaggerated destruction elements of gameplay, but it shows a desire to prevent the series from disappearing. As we approach the 30th anniversary of the original 1995 game and whispers of a reboot persist, Twisted Metal might make a return in 2025.

2025 Should See the Triumphant Return of Twisted Metal

A New Twisted Metal Project Could Be In Development

It’s been reported that a new installment in the Twisted Metal series was recently scrapped due to layoffs at Sony, particularly affecting Firesprite studio. This team might have been working on a live-service spin-off within the Twisted Metal universe. Given that the project was still in its early stages, it seems unlikely for another studio to pick up where they left off. The cancellation could signify an early instance of Sony scaling back its ambitious plans for live-service games, as they initially supported as many as 12 such projects before significantly reducing their goals in this area.

As a devoted fan, I’ve been eagerly following updates from J.S. Gilbert, the legendary voice of Sweet Tooth from the classic Twisted Metal games. He’s hinted at potential new projects, mentioning a revival of sorts for Twisted Metal Head On, Twisted Metal 2, and Twisted Metal: Black in 2025. This could be similar to the Mass Effect Legendary Edition, implying a remastered collection might be on the horizon. This news would undoubtedly excite fans like me, especially since Head On isn’t available on PS4 or PS5 at the moment. It might just open doors for another full-fledged release in the future.

2025 Will Mark the 30th Anniversary of the Original Twisted Metal Game

Given the increasing recognition of the game Twisted Metal among both gamers and non-gamers due to the TV show, it’s logical for Sony to leverage this popularity as a starting point for reviving the series. With Season 2 of the show expected to air next year, coinciding with the original 1995 Twisted Metal‘s 30-year anniversary, this presents an opportune moment for Sony. They could capitalize on this by either re-releasing previous Twisted Metal games in 2025 or announcing a new installment in the series, with the latter option being more thrilling given its novelty.

Introducing a fresh installment of “Twisted Metal” could be an excellent opportunity for Sony to make amends in the demolition derby genre, considering that “Destruction AllStars” didn’t quite meet expectations in 2021.

Is Sony considering to carry on with the tradition of remakes and remasters, perhaps under the title “Twisted Metal Legacy Collection,” or aim higher with a brand new sequel? Given the lengthy absence of the franchise from gaming, either move seems appropriate. The series has ample room for growth, taking advantage of modern gaming technology to enhance destruction physics, visual effects, and multiplayer interactions. Though not everyone may appreciate the Twisted Metal TV show, it does add depth to the series lore, which could be utilized to create more engaging single-player campaigns in future games.
