Ever since the release of LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game, the LEGO brand has taken players on numerous adventures through various iconic franchises. They’ve delved into superhero stories with titles like LEGO Marvel Superheroes and LEGO Batman, immersed themselves in the magical world of Harry Potter with the LEGO Harry Potter series, journeyed to a fantasy realm through LEGO Lord of the Rings, and embarked on an epic IP-filled adventure with LEGO Dimensions. If there are LEGO bricks associated with it, chances are good that the intellectual property has been featured in a video game. Now, it seems fitting to shine a spotlight on another: SpongeBob SquarePants.
For decades now, I’ve been immersed in the vibrant underwater universe of SpongeBob SquarePants, Nickelodeon’s most iconic intellectual property, and it doesn’t look like that’s going to change any time soon. With numerous spin-offs, films, and a plethora of entertaining video games, this world just keeps expanding. Lately, with titles like SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, Bikini Bottom has been taking center stage more than ever. Given this momentum, it seems like the perfect moment for LEGO to jump into this colorful world too!
LEGO and SpongeBob Feel Made For Each Other
There Have Been So Many SpongeBob Games Recently
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but notice the recent surge of excitement around the SpongeBob SquarePants IP in the gaming world. It all began in 2020 with the release of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, which breathed new life into the 2003 original. The success of that game seems to have inspired the studio to create a brand-new adventure in 2022, titled SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake. And just this year, we’ve been gifted another platformer, SpongeBob SquarePants: The Patrick Star Game.
In the past five years, we’ve seen three main platform games set in Bikini Bottom. Moreover, these characters have been prominently featured in numerous Nickelodeon crossover titles. They’ve engaged in battles against other Nick characters in two “Nickelodeon All-Star Brawls,” raced against them in three “Nickelodeon Kart Racers,” and appeared in countless mobile games. Add to that the new movies, spin-offs, and it seems there’s an abundance of SpongeBob content. Given this, it appears that now is an excellent opportunity for LEGO to leverage the brand.
LEGO Could Show Off Even More of Bikini Bottom
LEGO has previously created an entire theme based on the popular IP, SpongeBob SquarePants. These LEGO sets allowed builders to recreate famous locations from the show like the Krusty Krab, Chum Bucket, and the homes of SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy. Regrettably, there have been no new sets since 2012. Nevertheless, it would be exciting to see LEGO explore Bikini Bottom even more through a video game.
A LEGO SpongeBob game has the potential to create something truly remarkable. If it adopts the open-world structure of recent LEGO games by Traveller’s Tales, players would have the freedom to explore all that Bikini Bottom has to offer. They could spend countless hours gathering thousands of studs, unlocking a variety of unique characters, and working to preserve the ocean from threats like Plankton. Just as LEGO The Incredibles utilized Pixar’s extensive library, it could also incorporate characters from Nickelodeon’s vast collection.
Currently, there’s no chatter about a LEGO SpongeBob game, and it appears unlikely that one will materialize. Nevertheless, these two brands have the potential to complement each other beautifully.
