Why a Red Dead Redemption Arthur Morgan Prequel isn’t Impossible

Why a Red Dead Redemption Arthur Morgan Prequel isn't Impossible

As a seasoned cowboy, roaming the digital frontier since the days of John Marston and Arthur Morgan, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia as I contemplate the future of Red Dead Redemption. While GTA 6 may be grabbing headlines, us old-timers are keeping an eager eye on the next chapter in this epic saga.

Despite Rockstar currently being engrossed in the development of the much-awaited Grand Theft Auto 6, fans are curious about the future of Red Dead Redemption. At present, it appears that the studio has shifted its focus away from Red Dead Online and no DLC content is on the horizon, leading many to speculate when we might see the announcement of Red Dead Redemption 3. Although there are numerous paths the studio could choose for this next installment, a prequel seems like a promising direction.

As a dedicated fan of the Red Dead Redemption series, I’ve noticed a pattern: the storylines have been primarily focused on prequels rather than advancing the plot. Instead of moving forward in time, Rockstar Games appears to be more intrigued by delving into the past. By introducing characters like Arthur Morgan, they’ve opened up a wealth of opportunities for further exploration of the past. Frankly, while some might yearn for Jack Marston’s story, I believe the franchise could offer so much more by delving even deeper into the early days of the Van Der Linde Gang.

Red Dead Redemption May Want to Continue Going Backwards

Red Dead Has Only Really Dealt With Prequels So Far

While Red Dead Revolver is indeed part of the broader Red Dead franchise, it was actually the Red Dead Redemption series that started in 2010, with the unforgettable journey of John Marston through an intricately crafted American frontier setting. The game, which many found hard to forget, followed Marston as he pursued his past adversaries across the Wild West, eventually meeting his fate at the hands of a U.S. Army unit.

In contrast to how the original “Red Dead Redemption” concluded by giving players control over John Marston’s son, Jack, Rockstar opted not to continue that narrative thread in the sequel. Instead, they took us back in time to the demise of the Van der Linde gang and placed us in the role of Arthur Morgan, who, like many others in the Wild West, had to battle for survival, confront former allies, and eventually meet his end. The game’s narrative followed a similar pattern as the first one, with players concluding their journey as John Marston, thus setting up the events depicted in “Red Dead Redemption.”

Arthur Morgan Has Many More Stories Left to Tell

As a gamer, I’ve found myself in two tales where my journey begins as a single character, only to meet an untimely end and step into another’s shoes. Intriguingly, the only sequel Rockstar Games has produced took us backwards instead of forwards, suggesting they might continue along this path – though hopefully, things could change with the third installment. Fortunately, there’s still plenty more stories to unfold about Arthur Morgan.

Title speculation: “Red Dead Redemption: Origins of the Van Der Linde Gang

It’s also possible that Rockstar might prefer not to reuse the same formula for a third time in Red Dead Redemption 3. This potential sequel could offer the studio an opportunity to steer the franchise towards uncharted territories or even venture into something entirely different from its predecessors. However, the rich characters developed by Rockstar remain ripe with storytelling possibilities, making another prequel an exciting prospect.
