As a devoted gamer, I can’t help but ponder what the arrival of the Switch 2 might imply for my beloved “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” series. Since no official news has been disclosed about another “Super Smash Bros.” game yet, it’s intriguing to speculate that a fresh entry in the franchise could be unveiled as a launch title, thereby enabling Nintendo to fully leverage the series’ triumphant success and ensure an electrifying start for the new console.

Ever since its debut in 2018, I’ve been an avid fan of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and it’s been a joy to witness its seven-year streak of success. Last year alone, it ranked as the third best-selling Nintendo Switch game, which isn’t surprising given its massive player base, even years after its initial release.

Unfortunately, recent news has left us fans in a bit of a bind; it seems that no new content, not even spirit fighters like those added last year, is on the horizon for Smash Ultimate. However, with the upcoming Switch 2 launching later this year, I can’t help but dream about a new version of this beloved title that would allow us to enjoy the next console generation without having to say goodbye to our favorite games.

Smash Ultimate is Done with Updates

Typically, games don’t receive updates seven years post-release, but Smash Ultimate has been exceptionally popular and continues to get bug fixes and occasional new content even as late as October 2024. The largest expansion came shortly after its launch in the form of DLC, introducing characters like Joker, Steve, and Sora. More recently, additional spirit fighters have been added incrementally. Given the effort required for each update, it’s not surprising that the game’s director, Masahiro Sakurai, has announced that there will be no more extra content for Smash Ultimate.

The cross-generational plans for the Switch 2 release suggest that it will be backward compatible, enabling fans to play Smash Ultimate on the new console without purchasing a fresh copy of the game. Releasing an updated version incorporating all DLC could serve as an effective strategy for Nintendo to stimulate sales of the Switch 2, given the game’s immense popularity as a multiplayer title, which might encourage early adoption of the new console.

When Could a Hypothetical Smash Bros. Ultimate Definitive Edition be Announced?

There’s no sign yet of a “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” definitive version, but many think it would be strategic to kick off the next generation of consoles with a proven best-seller. A definitive edition could offer playable characters added after launch, along with potential extras like new Mii costumes or additional spirit fighters from recent releases. So far, details about games for the Switch 2 have been scarce, but since Nintendo has announced a special Direct in April focused on the new console, it’s speculated that we might learn about some launch titles then.

Nintendo has consistently introduced a new “Smash Bros” game on each console since the N64. While a re-release or definitive edition isn’t an entirely new game, introducing one at launch could serve as a temporary filler for fans eagerly waiting for the seventh installment in the series. Despite the success of the “Super Smash Bros” series, it’s crucial to remember that its creator, Sakurai, also works on other projects and needs dedicated time for each one. A definitive edition of “Smash Ultimate” would provide Switch 2 users with an updated version in the series to tide them over until the right moment for the console’s official installment.
