Summary
- Venom almost crossed over with Spider-Man in No Way Home, but it never materialized due to studio complications.
- The differing personalities and portrayals of Venom and Spider-Man made the crossover difficult to envision.
- The complex relationship between Sony and Marvel, as well as conflicting character rights, pose challenges for potential crossovers.
Currently, the Marvel Cinematic Universe offers countless possibilities thanks to the ongoing multiverse narrative. Characters from both heroic and villainous realms, who might not have been featured before, are now making appearances, potentially influencing the Spider-Man series produced by Marvel Studios.
In the movie “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Tom Holland acted alongside several past superhero legends, making for an enjoyable spectacle. Interestingly, he nearly had a chance to collaborate with a famous Spider-Man antagonist – Tom Hardy’s character from Venom.
Tom Hardy Reveals How Close Things Came
It Seemed Like They Were Destined To Meet On The Grandest Stage

Ever since Tom Hardy donned the Venom suit, t The Last Dance, Venom was transported from his own universe into Holland’s – sparking hopes for a crossover, but only for Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, they didn’t manage to have the two iconic characters interact. This near-miss was shared by Hardy during an interview with The Playlist’s The Discourse podcast.
He mentioned, “We came closer than I ever thought possible, except for collaborating on a film, which I would have relished because it sounds like sheer enjoyment.” Since then, this hint has sparked numerous theories, but in practice, the outcome might not have matched expectations.
Venom And Spider-Man Are Very Different Personalities
It Would Have Been Tough To Bring Them Together

In the comics and movies, Venom has typically portrayed as a significant adversary for Spider-Man. Yet, Sony’s Venom film trilogy took a different route by transforming him into an antihero. With his aggressive inclinations and unstable personality, this change was essential to make him suitable as the main character in a three-film series. Placing this version of Venom within the Marvel universe would have been difficult to envision, as fans might anticipate him as a villain. However, that’s not how Tom Hardy’s portrayal would have been, and it could have created complications overall.
In a stark contrast, Hardy’s character had a distinct personality, demeanor, and appearance compared to the more polished Spider-Man portrayed by Holland, as envisioned by Marvel. It’s challenging to conceive how these two characters could have coalesced on-screen, given their differences, despite the evident talent of both actors. The failure of this collaboration suggests that insurmountable challenges arose, be it in the script or during decision-making processes. Hence, the idea never came to fruition, even though it might have been visually intriguing. However, considering the long-term implications, it’s unlikely such a partnership would have thrived sustainably.
Sony And Marvel Struggle To Work Together
There Would Have Been Lots Of Compromises From Each Side

It’s evident that teaming up Venom and Spider-Man on-screen would generate a lot of excitement, but it could have ended disastrously due to Sony and Marvel’s complex history with character rights. Characters like Wolverine and Beast from their respective films have occasionally crossed paths, but their partnership hasn’t always been seamless. Their ongoing issues are evident in recent developments, such as Spider-Man being excluded from Marvel’s television productions, and Kingpin being barred from appearing in their movies. This ongoing conflict suggests that a unified front between Sony and Marvel might remain elusive, and it seems this divide will persist for the foreseeable future.
It seems highly unlikely for Venom and Spider-Man to coexist in the same movie because both characters are well-established within their respective franchises. The notion that one character might need to compromise to make the other look stronger is challenging, as neither studio appears ready to yield. Moreover, Venom’s portrayal in Sony’s movies differs significantly from the traditional villain role Marvel typically envisions for Tom Hardy, creating another hurdle. Although fans are eager to see Tom Hardy’s character in a Spider-Man film, introducing his version of Venom might not have delivered the crossover experience many had hoped for.
