With the release of Battlefield 6 approaching, details are emerging and excitement is building. Fans are particularly eager to learn more because the previous game, Battlefield 2042, wasn’t well-received, and many hope the new installment will revitalize the series.
Longtime fans might be surprised to learn that the next *Battlefield* game, currently known as *Battlefield 6*, is being developed primarily for consoles. In a recent interview with IGN, technical director Christian Buhl and senior console combat designer Matthew Nickerson explained that while the *Battlefield* series started on PC, focusing on consoles now makes more sense due to the game’s expanded player base.
In 2002, Battlefield 1942 was released for PC, eventually being ported to Mac, as well.
Battlefield 6 Giving Extra Attention to Consoles Isn’t as Drastic of a Decision as it Seems
An Effort to Combat Cheating
During an interview with IGN, developers explained that they’re focusing on console releases first due to ongoing issues with cheating on PC. They stated that while cheating is much more common on PC, they are actively working to combat it with measures like secure boot and their new anti-cheat system, Javelin, which is now required to play. As another step, the developers are also including an option to disable crossplay with PC players.
There’s a catch, however. If crossplay between PC and consoles is turned off, players will only be able to play with others on the same platform. This means Xbox and PlayStation players won’t be able to team up. But when crossplay is enabled, PlayStation and Xbox players will be prioritized in matchmaking, with PC players filling any remaining spots – showing a preference for console players.
Buhl and Nickerson initially suggested to IGN that crossplay might be limited to consoles, but EA has clarified that this isn’t the case.
The *Battlefield* series has evolved significantly since its beginnings with *Battlefield 1942*, and it’s become extremely popular on consoles. While PC gamers still make up a large portion of the player base, PlayStation and Xbox are equally important platforms for the franchise. Given that these two console platforms combined have more players than PC, it’s logical that EA is focusing on them.
Cheating happens more often on PC than on consoles, but we’re working hard to combat it and make it a priority.
