The PlayStation State of Play event on February 12 was filled with unveilings and previews, yet there was no mention or sneak peek at Bungie’s upcoming PvP extraction shooter titled Marathon. This highly anticipated title was among a few notable games not presented during the event, leaving fans puzzled about why Bungie’s post-Destiny debut project wasn’t showcased.
Why Was Marathon Not At State of Play?
As per Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb, Marathon may not have been displayed because Bungie is expected to host their own event for it around April this year. During yesterday’s Game Mess Decides show, Grubb mentioned that this action aligns with Bungie’s typical strategies.
Instead of Marathon being present because they might follow their usual routine, it’s more likely that they’ll pursue their independent path for Destiny. Just like Bungie typically does, they plan to communicate directly with the audience this year as well. I suspect we’ll hear updates about Marathon in April, and these will be separate events from a State of Play.
2023 saw the unveiling of a fresh Marathon game, distinct from the ’90s trilogy developed by Bungie. With Bungie’s triumphs in Halo and Destiny under their belt, and their recent acquisition by PlayStation, there’s a significant amount of anticipation surrounding this new Marathon release.
During its creation, the Marathon game has faced numerous challenges. In 2024, it was reported that the game’s director, Christopher Barrett, was dismissed due to allegations of inappropriate behavior towards several female colleagues. Barrett has disputed these accusations and has subsequently sued Bungie. The latest information about the game itself was shared in October by its new director, Joe Ziegler, who also previously headed VALORANT. Ziegler mentioned that there have been significant modifications to the gameplay over the past couple of years following multiple playtests. He also explained that various aspects of the game are currently at different stages of completion.
