- Superman movie should show more of Clark Kent’s double life.
As a long-time comic book fan and gamer with a particular fondness for Superman, I’m excited about James Gunn’s upcoming take on the Man of Steel. Having grown up watching Christopher Reeve’s iconic portrayal of Clark Kent and his alter ego, I’ve come to appreciate the intricacies behind the character’s dual identity – something that not all adaptations have effectively conveyed.
Starting July 11, 2024, there’s just a year left before James Gunn’s unique take on Superman graces the big screens, introducing fans to a fresh face under the red and blue suit. Unlike many recent adaptations, this Superman won’t be an origin story according to Gunn. Previously, Zack Snyder distinguished his Superman from earlier versions with intense action scenes instead of the conventional lifting heavy objects. However, one element Snyder missed out on that Gunn plans to address is the development of the Clark Kent character.
Images released on the set of James Gunn’s “Superman” production reveal David Corenswet portraying Clark Kent multiple times in the film. Some viewers voicing their opinions online aren’t thrilled about his appearance as Clark, specifically his hairstyle. However, the distinctive hairdo could be an intriguing aspect that differentiates this Clark from other actors who have previously assumed the role.
The Clark Kent Alter Ego, Explained
In contrast to other DC superheroes who shield their real identities with masks or cowls, Superman doesn’t hide his face. It’s openly known that Clark Kent is his true identity, but not everyone is aware of this connection. It’s essential to note that it’s not only the glasses that conceal Superman’s identity; it has never been just about the glasses.
Clark Kent’s demeanor significantly differs from Superman’s, creating a striking contrast. Instead of the confident and eloquent Superman, Clark stutters occasionally, conveying a sense of insecurity. His speech pattern varies, and Lois Lane once mocked Christopher Reeve’s portrayal of Clark for using the term “swell.” The tone of his voice is softer than Superman’s, and he often slouches. Clark Kent is infamous for being clumsy; he frequently drops things or struggles to find what he needs in his pockets or briefcase. His tie gets caught on car doors, and he accidentally bumps into people. To further emphasize his lack of authority, he keeps his gaze fixed to the ground.
Clark exhibits an unusual way of dressing beyond his peculiar behavior. His clothes are often loose-fitting as he tries to conceal his physique. He favors plain outfits, reminiscent of a simple farm boy from Kansas. Clark seems devoid of any fashion sense. Furthermore, he frequently adjusts his glasses, constantly pushing them back up his nose and preventing them from slipping off. This additional distraction wouldn’t deceive even the most unsuspecting Metropolis residents.
As a gamer, I can tell you that the way a character’s hair looks plays a significant role in their overall appearance and identity. Just like in real life, our hairstyle often sets us apart from others and can even make it hard for people to recognize us if we change it up. For instance, imagine Clark Kent and Superman passing each other on the street – with Clark’s regular hairdo and Superman’s iconic flowing mane – they might not even give each other a second look! That’s why it’s essential that Clark Kent’s hair in the game looks drastically different from Superman’s, and David Corenswet’s portrayal of Clark Kent’s hairstyle is spot on.
Corenswet’s Hair for Clark Kent is Perfect
As a dedicated fan, I can appreciate the initial surprise when this new Clark Kent looks like the famous political streamer Hasan Piker. But once we move past that resemblance, it’s an ideal fit for the character. Changing his actions and body language, along with the updo hairstyle that makes his curls frame his face, will enhance his disguise. It’s crucial for Clark to maintain his secret identity as Superman, so when his glasses slip off, nobody would suspect it’s the Man of Steel standing before them. As a tenacious investigative journalist, Clark needs to blend in with various individuals he encounters while wearing the Superman persona.
Although Clark Kent doesn’t draw much attention to himself and rarely makes headlines, he often encounters Superman’s main adversary, Lex Luthor, among others. If his hair were styled differently, such as slicked back or parted to the side, his face would be more visible. When you compare Michael Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman with his Clark Kent, there is no resemblance whatsoever. Kudos to James Gunn and the team for their exceptional choice of hairstyle in the new Superman film.
James Gunn’s Superman Movie Should Feature More Clark Kent
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: In the DCEU, particularly Zack Snyder’s take on Superman, they didn’t quite capture the essence of grown-up Kal-El juggling his dual identity as both Superman and Clark Kent. Although Batman v Superman gave us more glimpses of Clark than Man of Steel, it wasn’t enough to make a noticeable difference between the two. James Gunn, if he gets a chance to work on this character, should emphasize Kal-El’s double life. It opens up an exciting new layer for the audience as we get to see him grapple with fresh challenges and experience some intriguing tension.
As a fan, I’ve noticed how skillfully Tyler Hoechlin portrays the challenging balance between a personal life and heroics in “Superman & Lois.” It’s not that Superman can’t be relatable, but given his alien origin and extraordinary abilities, it adds an extra layer of complexity. Instead, I find myself connecting more to Clark Kent’s human side. Don’t get me wrong; I love watching Superman use his powers, but what really captivates me is seeing aspects of myself reflected on the screen.
