Digimon Story: Time Stranger is now available, offering players a new, exciting story-driven adventure in the Digital World. Continuing the tradition of previous games, Time Stranger combines strategic turn-based battles with a long, immersive science-fantasy RPG storyline. This latest installment stands out with its massive roster of collectible Digimon – over 450 in total!
The latest installment boasts a delightful collection of creatures, reminiscent of Pokémon, and includes many beloved characters from the Digimon franchise. One Digimon, Merukimon, has particularly captured fans’ attention – and caused some confusion. His name is actually meant to be Mercurymon, a name deeply connected to his powers, history, and personality. It’s puzzling, then, why this strong and recognizable Digimon is instead known as Merukimon, a name that sounds like a random mix of syllables instead of a reference to the Roman god Mercury.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger: Why Isn’t Merukimon Called Mercurymon?
Mercurymon Is Named After the Roman God of Communication, Intellect, and Commerce
The world of Digimon often draws inspiration from mythology, and a particularly strong connection can be seen with Olympos XII – a group of 12 Digimon based on the gods of Ancient Rome. These powerful Digimon, often referred to as Shaman Digimon, directly correspond to the well-respected deities of Roman mythology. Here are some examples of these connections:
- Apollomon: inspired by Apollo, God of Music
- Dianamon: inspired by Diana, Goddess of the Hunt
- Marsmon: inspired by Mars, God of War
These influences often run deeper than just the origins of a name. With Mercurymon, this shows up as a love for speed, journeys, and sharing information. He’s famous for being the fastest Digimon in the Digital World, and his weapon, Aztec, can even cut through space and time. It’s hard to track him down because he’s always on the move. He’s also a natural leader, making smart choices to help Digimon and humans live together peacefully – for example, he rescues the main characters in Digimon Data Squad.
Okay, so playing through Digimon, I’ve noticed something weird. Merukimon totally embodies Mercury – super fast, a great communicator, always traveling, and really clever. Plus, Mercury’s usually portrayed as one of the calmer gods, even if he likes to play pranks. Merukimon is clearly one of the smartest of the Olympos XII, and his speed and leadership skills are obvious. It just doesn’t make sense that his name isn’t Mercurymon, especially in games like Digimon Story: Time Stranger! Why the different name?
Most people believe the name “Mercury” comes from the Roman version of the Greek god Hermes. This connection might ring a bell for players of games like Hades and God of War.
Merukimon Wasn’t Translated Incorrectly—Mercuremon Was
It’s generally believed that “Merukimon” is the result of a translation error, and this is true, but in a roundabout way. Before Merukimon was introduced in 2007’s Digimon Data Squad, a Digimon called Mercuremon made its debut in 2002, in the show Digimon Frontier. This Digimon, which is characterized by its power over steel, was translated to “Mercurymon” by the English localization team, either by mistake or because it simply sounded similar to Mercuremon. Thus, when it came time to localize Mercurymon for English versions of Digimon Data Squad (his debut), the name was already taken.
It’s not really clear why Merukimon was chosen as the name, especially when other options like Mercuremon might have worked better, though that could have been confusing. It’s a shame because this odd name makes him stand out from the rest of the Olympos XII and doesn’t quite fit with his character. However, after all this time, it’s probably too late to change it.
