As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the upcoming addition to the Dying Light franchise, The Beast, has piqued my interest like none other. The return of Kyle Crane and the introduction of the enigmatic Marius Fischer, also known as The Baron, promises a captivating narrative filled with intrigue and suspense.
In the forthcoming open-world zombie game titled “Dying Light: The Beast“, we find the return of Kyle Crane, the main character who mysteriously disappeared after the 2015 release of the original game. Fans of the series are thrilled to see him back, as the sequel will delve into the transformations – both physical and psychological – that Crane experienced during his years in captivity. The enigmatic Marius Fischer, a man known as The Baron, is Crane’s captor and adds an intriguing contrast to Crane’s character.
Game Rant recently spoke with Tymon Smektala, the mastermind behind the Dying Light series, to get insights into the psyche of the character known as The Baron. He shared some of the influences that shaped this figure and hinted at his driving forces. It appears that when Dying Light: The Beast launches in summer 2025, Kyle Crane will be embroiled in a significant confrontation.
Dying Light: The Beast Pits Kyle Crane Against The Baron
The Baron is a James Bond Villain
In any form of entertainment, a strong protagonist is often defined by their equally powerful antagonist. For instance, characters like Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7 have been pitted against adversaries such as Sephiroth, who are intelligent and complex in nature. Smektala, the creative mind behind The Baron from Techland, drew inspiration for this character from a diverse array of video game antagonists. However, his primary source of inspiration was the James Bond movie series, which is renowned for crafting unforgettable villains. He elaborated that this franchise has been instrumental in shaping The Baron’s character.
As a fan, I found myself drawn to the intriguing antagonists in the James Bond series. They often stand shoulder-to-shoulder with 007 in importance, and while they may not be heroes, they possess an allure that keeps us engaged. Instead of creating a ‘likable’ villain, we aimed for charismatic and intriguing – someone who exudes malice yet captivates the audience with their unique traits. These villains aren’t typically likable, but their special qualities make them fascinating. Whether it’s their appearance, their speech patterns, or their thought processes, they possess something extraordinary that we can’t help but care about. That’s what we strove to capture.
The Baron’s Decisions Are Grounded in Logic
In the thrilling narrative of “Dying Light: The Beast,” I find myself as Kyle Crane, breaking free from confinement and unwittingly crossing paths with the ruthless Baron. Simultaneously, my mission is to lend a helping hand to the residents of Castor Woods. Smektala paints a chilling portrait of the Baron as a cold, calculating figure who relies solely on logic in his decisions, devoid of any emotional considerations. He states, “The Baron…is a man devoid of empathy.
”He’s definitely very brilliant, a great mind, someone that you would like to invite over for dinner. But at the same time, he has an element to him that is quite emotionless. He thinks, but he doesn’t really feel. He considers everything based on reasoning, on logic, and facts, and he basically removes the human factor altogether. I think that’s what makes him interesting and surprising for players, because when we look at other human beings, we expect them to factor emotions into their thinking. The Baron doesn’t really have that. Everything is pure logic. Everything is calculated.”
Techland has really pulled out all the stops to make The Baron an unforgettable antagonist. Smektala was eager to point out that there’s still much about this character we don’t know yet. With 2025 marking the 10th anniversary of the Dying Light series, fans can anticipate more details coming our way around January 26. It’s possible we’ll learn more about The Baron, but regardless of what’s revealed in the coming months, a summer filled with zombies is definitely on the cards!
