At the dawn of the Locust War, players will reprise their roles as Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, experiencing the terrifying onset of the Locust Horde for the very first time. Although familiar Locust troops are expected in Gears of War: E-Day, The Coalition may surprise both new and returning fans by introducing fresh Locust types into the game.
Ranks of the Locust Horde Explained
In the Gears of War series, which takes place during the Locust War, gamers frequently come across a specific group of Locust soldiers. At the bottom of this hierarchy are the Wretches, resembling apes, and Tickers, explosive troops. The Berserkers, blind yet enraged females, follow these low-ranking troops; they can single-handedly obliterate entire COG soldier squads. Only powerful weapons like scorchers or hammer of dawn strikes can defeat the Berserkers. After the Berserkers come the large but often slow Boomers, Butchers, Grinders, Maulers, and Tremors, who usually carry massive, deadly weapons such as boomshots, cleavers, flails, and scorchers. The common Drones fill various roles, including Beast Riders; they can also advance in rank to become Theron Guards or leaders like General RAAM.
The Kantuses predominantly form the infantry and religious hierarchy among the Locusts, possessing an ability to resurrect fallen soldiers in combat and ascend to higher ranks, such as Armored Kantuses and high-ranking positions like Skorge (High Priest/General). The bulk of common Locust forces consist mainly of mutated animals discovered within the subterranean Hollow. These creatures include the gigantic, spider-like Corpsers, aerial Reavers, massive Brumaks, bat-like Kryll, catapulting Siegebeasts, gun-firing Seeders, and more. Notably, uniquely imulsion-mutated creatures would often serve as mounts for Locust leaders, with examples being Ukkon’s mutated Corpser Shibboleth. However, such unique mutations were rarely replicated among their kind.
As a seasoned gamer, I’ve stumbled upon an intriguing revelation about those relentless Locust hordes we often face in our games. It turns out they are genetically modified humans, once destined to serve as super soldiers for the Coalition of Ordered Governments. Quite a twist, isn’t it?
Potential New Locust Designs in Gears of War: E-Day
The Gears of War series often introduces new types of Locust troops in prequels or DLC, such as the Serapedes and Ragers. For instance, in the Gears of War 3: RAAM’s Shadow DLC campaign, which takes place nine years after Emergence Day and five years before the original game, Zeta Squad encounters and eliminates some massive Serapedes – a species that was initially introduced in Gears of War 3 but later retconned to have been present during the entire Locust War. Similarly, in Gears of War: Judgment, set several months after Emergence Day, the Ragers were introduced. These creatures start out as weak Drones, but if provoked, they transform into huge, red monstrous beings. Most Ragers perished early on in the war, which is why they are rarely seen in other games.
Drawing from the pattern set by the introduction of novel Locust species in the early stages of the Gears of War timeline, as seen in Gears of War: Judgment and Gears of War 3, The Coalition might introduce a few new Locust types during E-Day. These newly introduced species could be explained as having perished early in the war, like the Ragers.
New Hollow Creature Designs in Gears of War: E-Day
In addition to the latest humanoid Locust varieties, The Coalition might also unveil fresh Hollow entities compelled to serve the Locust Horde. One such creature could mimic the Swarm’s Pouncers and Snatchers, approaching COG troops stealthily before eliminating them swiftly. This new Hollow creature could also be rewritten as the biological forerunner of the Pouncers and Snatchers. Another potential new creature could be a colossal, bat-like monster capable of hurling COG soldiers to their deaths and dropping Locust troops for reinforcement. These possible additions to the Locust army could contribute significantly to making Gears of War: E-Day one of the scariest games in the series.
