Why Ghost of Tsushima’s Jin Sakai May Never Return Like Sly Cooper and Infamous Heroes

In 2020, Ghost of Tsushima made its debut, and since then, the developer Sucker Punch has been diligently working on its successor. Initially, it was believed that the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima would be a traditional second installment continuing the story of protagonist Jin Sakai. However, many were taken aback when they learned last year that this wouldn’t be the reality.

Instead of immediately continuing the story of Ghost of Tsushima, the sequel is titled Ghost of Yotei. In contrast to the original game, Ghost of Yotei takes place 300 years later with a new protagonist named Atsu, offering a fresh perspective. However, the absence of Jin has left many fans feeling a sense of emptiness. It’s not the first time a character from Sucker Punch has had an uncertain future, and hopefully, it won’t be something that happens again to Jin.

After Ghost of Tsushima, Jin Sakai Could Be Meeting the Same Fate as Other Sucker Punch Heroes

Sly Cooper and Infamous

It’s worth mentioning that the latest installment of the Sly Cooper series wasn’t produced by Sucker Punch, but Sly Cooper remains a prominent character within their team. In the game Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, Sly ends up being sent to Ancient Egypt. More than ten years have passed since this game was launched, and we still haven’t received definite news about what lies ahead for Sly and his companions.

Regarding the character Cole MacGrath from the game Infamous, it’s been presumed that he met his end in Infamous 2. However, fan speculation proposes a more positive outcome for him. Many gamers have longed for a comeback of the Infamous series, but at this point, developers Sucker Punch haven’t announced any intentions to carry on with the storyline. Given that there are no revival plans, it remains unclear if Cole truly perished or not. The finale of Infamous 2 certainly gave the impression he was gone for good, yet fans continue to harbor hope.

Ghost of Yotei is set to release for the PS5 on October 2, 2025.

Jin’s Open-Ended Story Raises Questions

In the final moments of “Ghost of Tsushima”, I found myself standing face-to-face with Shimura. The choice was mine: honorably end his life, or deviate from the samurai code and let him live. With the Shogun now viewing me as a threat, my future remains uncertain. Will I find peace in the years to come, or will I be forced into a relentless battle against the Shogun?

Atsu is an exciting new direction, but it also leaves a Jin-shaped hole in a lot of fans’ lives.

Indeed, Jin’s narrative is somewhat straightforward compared to Sly and Cole, yet it doesn’t lack depth for further exploration. Despite the victory on Tsushima Island, Jin’s tale seems far from concluded, with possibilities arising from the Shogun or the second Mongol invasion that occurs seven years later. Sucker Punch possesses a rich reservoir of untapped potential in this regard. Moreover, characters like Jin from Ghost of Tsushima, Cole from Infamous, and Sly Cooper all have compelling personalities that draw players in, making it disappointing not to revisit these characters in new adventures.

Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yotei Can Hopefully Live in Harmony

Despite an unexpected turn for a sequel, Ghost of Yotei remains remarkably intriguing. It’s also heartening to imagine having Jin Sakai appear one more time, which many fans would appreciate. Whether the developer decides to reintroduce Jin for another story remains uncertain; however, until then, he continues a pattern observed in several Sucker Punch characters – their fates shrouded in mystery.
