Even though it’s only available in a very basic early version, Hytale is quickly becoming a strong rival to Minecraft. One thing Hytale does particularly well is create interesting creatures – there are already dozens of unique animals players can find. But the more I play, the harder I find it to actually hunt these peaceful or neutral creatures for food.
I’ve been playing Minecraft since its early beta days in 2010 and have seen it change a lot over the years. One of my favorite things to do in Minecraft is build automated farms for resources like wool, meat, and crops to keep my character going. While that’s typical for a game like this, I don’t plan on doing anything similar in Hytale – specifically, I won’t create systems to quickly kill creatures or hunt peaceful animals for food. This is because Hytale has a key feature that Minecraft lacks.
Hytale Has Me Hesitant to Kill Animal Mobs
It’s hard to directly compare Minecraft and Hytale right now, as Hytale is still under development. Although Hytale faced a long and difficult development process, including a cancellation and revival by Riot Games, it’s still lacking some of its final features. Even so, it’s obvious the developers have put a lot of care and detail into the game, resulting in a wide variety of creatures available from the start.

Hytale already features 61 different creatures, surpassing the number of passive and neutral creatures currently found in Minecraft. While Minecraft has a larger overall number of creatures when including hostile ones, Hytale also boasts a variety of hostile monsters that aren’t animals.
Image via Hypixel I really enjoy some of the animal creatures in Hytale. The Jackalope was one of the first I encountered when I started playing, and I also love the look of the Cattle and Calves, which are common in the plains where I’ve built my base. What stands out to me is how detailed the animals are – both in how they look and how they move. Their variety and design are truly impressive.
Hytale also features several different races of NPCs, including Elves, Faun, and Kweebecs.

As I’ve been playing Hytale, I’ve noticed a lot of the creatures feel familiar if you’ve spent time in Minecraft. It’s pretty clear Hytale took inspiration from it. Minecraft has its own cool mobs like Golems, Piglins, and Endermen, but Hytale puts its own spin on some of the classics. Instead of just a regular rabbit, you’ve got Jackalopes, and the Rams are a cool variation of sheep. But Hytale doesn’t just copy – they’ve added totally new animals like Saber-Toothed Tigers and Snakes that you just don’t find in Minecraft at all, which is awesome!
Hytale’s Mobs Are Far More Detailed than Minecraft’s
Image via Hypixel Like Minecraft, Hytale includes familiar creatures, but they’re much more detailed. While Minecraft’s blocky style is well-known, it means its creatures aren’t very detailed. Hytale’s creatures have a similar blocky look, but with far more detail in their designs, making them more expressive and giving them clearer faces compared to the simpler textures of Minecraft’s creatures.
The detailed animations in Hytale make it difficult for me to hunt for food. The animal mobs have surprisingly expressive personalities, and it’s genuinely upsetting to see them realistically fall and close their eyes when defeated. Unlike Minecraft, where mobs simply disappear, Hytale‘s mobs leave behind a body, constantly reminding me of what I’ve done. It’s even harder when mobs like cows and pigs have baby animals nearby – it feels wrong to hunt them for food.
It’s Hard Watching Hytale’s Animal Mobs Die, So I Have Resorted to the Alternative
I’ve decided to play as a vegan in Hytale, so I needed a way to get food without harming any animals. I discovered that farming is the perfect solution! I created a large garden where I grow crops like lettuce and eggplant, which I can then cook at the Chef’s Stove. I usually make Wild Berry Salad because lettuce grows fast and wild berries are easy to find. This lets me keep my character healthy and avoid hunting the cute animals in Hytale just to satisfy my hunger.
