As the first genuine rival to The Sims 4, which has ruled the life simulation genre for a quarter of a century, many life simulation enthusiasts were eagerly waiting for something fresh. As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but notice that one of the key indicators of a video game’s success is its player base. In the initial weeks following its release, this figure offers a glimpse into the game’s potential longevity. However, it’s essential to understand that the rules can vary in Early Access, and a drop in the player count for games like InZOI doesn’t automatically signal impending failure. You see, Early Access games are often seen as works-in-progress by their players, with crucial elements yet to be added. Once these features are rolled out through updates, the game tends to attract more players, creating a pattern that continues throughout Early Access.

InZOI’s Player Count Problem

Since the debut of InZOI , its player base has seen a substantial decline. During the initial launch week, the number of simultaneous players surpassed 87,000. However, only two weeks later, the player count plummeted by more than 90% to just 5,500 gamers. Since its release, there have been numerous complaints about InZOI, with concerns raised over aspects such as the use of generative AI, limited gameplay, and the karma system, which some find bothersome.

For InZOI, these high numbers could indicate cause for concern, but it’s not necessarily all doom and gloom. Games like Palworld have shown this trend, with player counts peaking at release and then falling off. However, an uptick in player interest for Palworld has been observed with each update, leading to its current success as more updates have been rolled out.

Why It Isn’t Over For InZOI

It’s quite possible that we’ll witness a significant increase in player numbers for InZOI. At present, the game has experienced a substantial decline in its player base. However, when the next major update for InZOI arrives in May 2025, there’s a strong chance that players will flock back to explore the new content. It’s a common pattern: players get drawn in by fresh updates, then take a break until the next one comes along. This is particularly true for Early Access games, which are still works-in-progress and often lack key features that become essential later on. As a result, player enthusiasm can dwindle when they encounter content barriers.

InZOI Can Retain Its Player Count

The number of players typically surges following an update, particularly when the update introduces fresh features or quality-of-life improvements. Transparency is key with InZOI, as they have openly shared their upcoming content releases and the roadmap for its Early Access phase. Some of the planned updates include a new world, playable ghosts, mod support, cheats, enhancements to Build mode, additional editing city options, family trees, and numerous other features.

The following enhancements will roll out progressively throughout 2025. Some of these improvements aim to alleviate player concerns, including playable spirits and expanded customization choices for cities. These features are deeply connected to the karma system and should result in a noticeably different experience compared to the current one. InZOI, which has faced criticism for its simplistic gameplay, will see further gameplay elements added via updates, likely contributing to maintaining higher player numbers over time.
