Why is Spectre Divide Closing Down in 2025?

In September 2024, Spectre Divide was launched, but surprisingly, by March 2025, it was disclosed that both the game and its developer would cease operations. This announcement was made despite the studio having secured substantial investments in the tens of millions and enjoyed backing from some of the top streamers within the industry.

As a dedicated gamer, I was taken aback when I heard the news about Spectre Divide shutting down, even though it wasn’t the first shooter game to close so swiftly in 2024. Now, let’s delve deeper into the matter and figure out why this much-loved game is ceasing operations in 2025.

Why Did Spectre Divide Fail?

The game Spectre Divide is anticipated to be the next major sensation in competitive first-person shooters, offering a distinctive style and groundbreaking features. Notably, it has gained endorsement from Michael ‘shroud’ Grzesiek, a renowned streamer and former professional player who is globally recognized.

Spectre Divide’s unique selling point was the ‘duality’ function, enabling players to simultaneously control two separate character entities concurrently in real-time.

Initially, Spectre Divide didn’t manage to maintain its position on the charts for long after its release, struggling to attract users and establish a solid user base.

On social media, the Mountaintop Studios team disclosed the reason behind the failure of Spectre Divide.

Regrettably, our initial Season 1 release didn’t meet the required level of popularity to continue supporting the game and maintain Mountaintop financially.

Initially, we were hopeful for the first week’s performance. Approximately 400,000 individuals have played our game so far, with a maximum number of around 10,000 simultaneously active players across all platforms. However, as days have passed, the number of active users and income generated have not been sufficient to meet the daily operational expenses of Spectre and our studio.

This issue is common for games that are free-to-play and rely on a continuous live-service model. If there aren’t enough players, the studio can’t sustain itself financially, which has become more frequent in recent times. Last year, the game Concord was removed from online stores only weeks after its release due to insufficient player numbers.

Was Spectre Divide Bad?

As soon as Spectre Divide was released, there were questions like, ‘Is Spectre Divide fading away?’ The uncertainty arose quickly among those excited to play the game, as it seemed that the game faced trouble right from its debut.

Regrettably, Spectre Divide had numerous bugs upon its launch in September 2024, which could lead to the game being dead on arrival since people typically dislike playing games filled with issues, even when they are free.

It turned out that the Duality feature was more of a novelty item rather than a substantial contribution, and it didn’t seem to significantly enhance the main structure of the game.

Many supporters eager to follow Spectre Divide found themselves disappointed as Shroud, the game’s primary promoter, was frequently occupied with other titles such as Deadlock and Marvel Rivals, resulting in less attention being given to the game he had endorsed from the beginning.

Essentially, the lessons learned from the launch of Spectre Divide were not ones for success, which is why it will be shutting down in 2025.

The launch of Spectre Divide served as a lesson in what should be avoided when introducing a new game, leading to its closure in 2025.
