As a Jujutsu Kaisen enthusiast with a soft spot for complex characters, Aoi Todo has truly stolen my heart. With his boisterous personality and muscle-bound physique, he initially comes off as just another meathead. But boy, was I wrong!
This feature contains spoilers from the Shibuya Incident arc in Jujutsu Kaisen, season 2.
Aoi Todo makes a grand entrance into the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, leaving many questioning his nature. He inquires about a stranger’s preferences regarding women, which is unusual. His fascination with idols is intriguing, and it’s hard to tell if he’s merely muscular or if there’s more depth to him beneath the surface. Characters in Jujutsu Kaisen are known for their complexity, and Todo stands out as one of the most intricate.
Initially, Aoi Todo begins a friendship with a puzzled Yuji Itadori that primarily depends on him. As their bond deepens, Todo consistently demonstrates his integrity and devotion. Eventually, Todo’s strong character and emotional wisdom shield Yuji from an imminent execution at the hands of Mahito. In essence, Aoi Todo is a remarkable friend to have.
Todo Pushes His Friends to Strive for More
As an avid fan, I must say that the Kyoto Sister-School Goodwill Event truly showcases each Jujutsu High student’s unique personality. Among all, Aoi Todo stands out with his remarkable demonstration of sportsmanship. He wholeheartedly mentors Yuji, extending a warm welcome even when Yuji initially seems uninterested. It’s this selfless act that truly captivates me!
Tutor Yuji on the Black Flash method, an uncommon physical assault that sorcerers can occasionally execute under specific conditions. You could say it’s like a sorcerer achieving peak performance. Upon observing the gap between Yuji’s physical punches and the cursed energy defining his Divergent Fist technique, Todo takes up the challenge against his latest acquaintance.
The outstanding Level 1 enchanter has no tolerance for average performance, particularly from those he holds dear. During the first group battle in episode 15 of season 1, titled “Kyoto Sister School Exchange Event – Group Battle 1 -,” Todo presents Yuji with a tough choice.
If you’re satisfied staying on that level, then sadly, you and I can’t possibly stay best friends
In this rephrased version: Yuji learns from Todo as they engage in combat, with Todo imparting fresh insights about managing cursed energy. Later, during an attack by Pseudo-Geto’s allies on Tokyo Jujutsu High School, the training from Todo empowers Yuji to successfully execute a black flash move against Hanami, a potent special-grade cursed spirit.
Todo Advocates for His Friends
Once Todo establishes a connection with someone, no obstacle can separate them, not even Todo’s associates. After Todo’s initial clash with Itadori during the “Kyoto Sister School Exchange Event – Group Battle 1,” his Kyoto classmates interrupted their sparring session. Despite Principal Gakuganji ordering his students to eliminate Itadori, Todo went against these orders, urging Noritoshi and the others to step back. Todo’s determination to protect Yuji, even against his own classmates, is commendable.
In public, Todo shows Yuji great respect, but true friendship can be measured by how a person talks about you when you’re not present. It’s disheartening when someone like a so-called friend compliments you to your face and then badmouths you when you’re not around – such as a two-faced ‘friend’ who pretends to admire you while secretly gossiping about you negatively.
Luckily, Todo is completely genuine in all that he does. He never resorts to deceit when speaking directly to you and consistently supports you in private discussions. The finale of Season 1 underscores Todo’s dedication to Yuji. Upon observing Itadori’s abilities during the Goodwill Event, he takes it upon himself to endorse Itadori for promotion.
Todo Gives Space for His Friends’ Emotions
The event that greatly impacts Yuji and Todo’s friendship is during the Shibuya Incident. Friends who are otherwise kind often find it difficult to cope with grief, either by ignoring their friend’s emotions or becoming so distraught they let the bond slip away. When Todo sees Yuji grieving for Nanami, Nobara, and Sukuna’s numerous victims, viewers can sense that his reaction might take various forms.
In a different phrasing, Aoi Todo’s stereotypical tough-guy persona might lead audiences to anticipate him reprimanding Yuji. Yet, one could imagine a blunt, “Snap out of it” kind of lecture. Nevertheless, such an approach isn’t what Yuji requires at this moment. Instead, Todo addresses Yuji in a soothing manner, providing empathy for his friend’s profound sadness. In this instance, Todo acknowledges Yuji’s affection for others and guides that affection towards more constructive outlets.
Brother, you’re a man amongst men. Don’t limit yourself to such narrowmindedness.
Later on, Todo adjusts his conversation towards progression. He recalls Yuji about the inherent uncertainty that comes with being a jujutsu sorcerer, relieving him from an overwhelming guilt that no single person should carry. Eventually, Todo motivates Yuji to persist in his struggle, suggesting that all the losses sustained during the Shibuya Incident won’t have been in vain if he keeps fighting.
At times, I grapple to discern purpose from the loss of life, a struggle that risks tarnishing the sacred memory of the departed… Yet, what task has been bestowed upon you?… Only when you unearth its essence can you pause your journey ahead.
In the show’s 45th episode of season 2, titled “Metamorphosis,” Todo’s insights modify Yuji’s outlook, empowering the kind-hearted youth to carry on battling. This resurgence strengthens their bond, which we now recognize as a friendship. As Yuji prepares to engage Mahito in combat, he departs with an expression of gratitude and refers to Todo as his brother. It’s a pity that not everyone is fortunate enough to find a friend like Todo. (Paraphrased for natural and easy-to-read language)
