- Extracted Shadows retain aspects of their personality, impacting combat, and Jinwoo’s limited storage capacity requires strategic use.
The start of Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow- ignited with a bang through the Red Gate Incident in its initial episodes, introducing viewers to Sung Jinwoo as the Shadow Monarch, displaying his power augmented by an army of Shadows. The most captivating moment in the first two episodes of the second season of Solo Leveling is the fight between Jinwoo and the Ice Elf Barca, a thrilling animated skirmish that highlighted Jinwoo’s expertise in multiple techniques, such as Shadow Extraction.
Even though Jinwoo secured a win over a stronger team such as Barca, he unfortunately failed to obtain his Shadow and expand his collection. This would’ve meant gaining an incredibly potent new partner that could’ve been invaluable. The reason behind the unsuccessful extraction remains unclear.
A Recap on The Mechanics of Jinwoo’s Shadow Extraction
Higher-Level Entities Are Much Harder To Extract
Following the events of episodes 11 and 12, known as his Job-Change Quest, Sung Jinwoo was bestowed with the title of Shadow Monarch. This title brought along the Shadow Extraction ability. With this power, he can pull out the essence or “Shadow” from a freshly deceased enemy’s body, making it serve him as a personal solider. By uttering the command “Arise”, Jinwoo has three chances to extract the Shadow from a corpse; once these opportunities are used, he will never be able to do so again.
Shadow Extraction utilizes an energy source known as Mana to bring forth the spirit of the recently departed from nothingness. It’s more challenging to summon higher-level entities, as demonstrated when Jinwoo initially acquired this ability and needed three tries along with a persuasive speech to successfully extract Igris the Bloodred.
Instead of allowing your sharp weapon to deteriorate in this damp and run-down location, why not consider using it for its intended purpose – defeating adversaries? If you’re seeking a worthy recipient for your loyalty, join me.
Instead of defending the throne of one long gone, defend the man who stands before you.

Shadows stemming from more prominent figures often maintain traits of their former personalities, much like Igris and “Tank”, the Shadow of White Tiger Guild A-Rank Tank Kim Chul who exhibited a strong personality. In the Red Gate Incident, Jinwoo amassed numerous shadows, among them was the leader of the local Ice Bears, which he summoned upon his return to the Demon Castle Dungeon during Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow-, episode 3.
At first, Jinwoo could only accommodate a limited number of “Shadows,” requiring him to eliminate some before adding new ones. However, as he progresses and levels up, the capacity for storing Shadows expands. In combat, summoning Shadows comes with a high “Mana” cost, which was evident during his fight against the Ice Elves.
Jinwoo’s Failure to Extract Barca
Rank Differences, or a Symbol of Something Greater?
In my observation, Jinwoo’s knack for drawing resilience from confrontations has been crucial to his endurance through numerous challenging encounters against adversaries stronger than him. He’s successfully vanquished multiple enemies whose names flashed red on the System’s HUD, making it vital for his power pursuit to be able to harness the Shadows of those defeated foes.
Despite the significant gap in skill or rank between him and his target, this seems to be the major hurdle for successful extraction. Yet, even if he were victorious in combat, it wouldn’t elicit the same level of admiration that we observed with Igris on every occasion.
Despite the unlikely circumstances surrounding Igris’s extraction, the fact that Ashborn was recognized by the Shadow within Jinwoo during their fight caught Barca’s attention. He perceived Jinwoo as a fellow monster, remarkable for his ability to comprehend the language of monsters and even find pleasure in their battles. Given that Barca himself is at a higher level than Jinwoo, there was still a chance that the extraction could be successful. It might be that Barca’s Shadow resisted pledging allegiance to a human, but it’s more probable that the significant difference in levels between Jinwoo and his target made the extraction impossible.
