Why Marvel Rivals’ Launch Could Be a Big Deal for DC Games

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the prospect of a DC Comics hero shooter game is nothing short of exhilarating. Having grown up reading comics from both Marvel and DC, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia at the thought of stepping into the roles of these iconic characters in a dynamic, interactive environment.

On December 6th, Marvel Comics and NetEase Games are set to debut their entry into the hero shooter genre with the launch of “Marvel Rivals“. Available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series platforms, this new third-person Marvel game allows players to assume roles of famous Marvel Comics characters like Black Panther, Magneto, and even the humorous Jeff the Land Shark. The gameplay and visual design of “Marvel Rivals” shares similarities with the hero shooter game “Overwatch“, both boasting numerous characters, 6v6 game modes, and being free-to-play. As yet unclear if “Rivals” can match the success of “Overwatch“, it could potentially motivate DC Comics to create a similar hero shooter game of their own.

The Setup for Marvel Rivals

Originally unveiled in March, the game titled “Marvel Rivals” is a product of a meeting between Doctor Doom and his future self, 2099, which results in multiple Marvel universes colliding. In this scenario, characters from diverse realms will engage in battles against each other, vying to defeat the Latverian who meddles with the multiverse. While Doctor Doom poses a significant threat, he’s not the only one as Galacta, the daughter of Galactus estranged from her father, oversees these conflicts and worlds during this critical moment. The cinematic trailer for “Rivals” showcases five distinct worlds, although it’s anticipated that the majority of playable heroes hail from unseen Earths.

From a gameplay perspective, I find myself in awe of how each character, from the mighty Hulk with his ground-pounding smash and gamma radiation-empowered laser attacks for Iron Man, to the enigmatic Moon Knight summoning Khonshu’s arms to pummel enemies, and Illyana Rasputina, also known as Magik, transforming into the demonic Darkchylde – every character is unique in their abilities. As of now, it seems that nine diverse maps have been announced for Rivals‘s inaugural season, ranging from the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda to Tokyo 2099, Yggsgard, and the Charteris Base: Hell’s Heaven, among others.

Marvel Rivals’ complete roster of fighters so far includes:

  • Adam Warlock
  • Black Panther
  • Captain America
  • Doctor Strange
  • Groot
  • Hawkeye
  • Hela
  • Hulk
  • Iron Man
  • Jeff the Land Shark
  • Loki
  • Luna Snow
  • Magik
  • Magneto
  • Mantis
  • Moon Knight
  • Namor
  • Peni Parker
  • Psylocke
  • Punisher
  • Rocket Raccoon
  • Scarlet Witch
  • Spider-Man
  • Star-Lord
  • Storm
  • Thor
  • Venom
  • Winter Soldier

The Potential of a DC Comics Hero Shooter

In simple terms, it’s intriguing to envision a hero shooter game, akin to ‘Marvel Rivals’, based on the diverse cast of characters from the DC Comics multiverse. The narrative could mirror that of ‘Rivals’, with villains like the Anti-Monitor and the Batman Who Laughs serving as formidable threats to unify the multiverse, much like Doctor Doom and Galactus do in Marvel’s storyline. Since ‘Rivals’ already shares a structural similarity with the renowned DC Comics saga, ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’, Warner Bros. could potentially adapt this storyline for their own hero shooter game. This game could feature maps set across various Earths, such as Earth-30, where Russia holds dominance, or other planets like the Green Lantern’s base on Oa.

In this imagined DC hero shooter game, numerous memorable characters could take on diverse roles. For instance, Green Lantern Kyle Rayner might assume a tank-like role by piloting one of his many mech constructs inspired by renowned Japanese manga and anime. Conversely, Green Arrow could operate as a skilled sniper, with each arrow type he uses delivering varying damage types. For example, his boxing glove arrow would be more effective in close combat situations, whereas his kryptonite arrow would inflict greater damage on Kryptonians.

On various Earths, numerous fighters might emerge with unique talents. For example, Deathstroke’s character could be inspired by his Viking-esque depiction in “Dark Knights of Steel,” while Wonder Woman could draw from her role as the Princess of Hell in the “Absolute Universe.

Possible Hurdles of a DC Comics Hero Shooter

It seems that Marvel Rivals, a fresh addition to the hero shooter category, could potentially be quite engaging. However, it’s important to remember that no game is a guaranteed financial hit or popular release from the get-go. Unfortunately, the hero shooter genre has been experiencing a downturn in popularity following the launch of Overwatch 2, and this decline can be seen in multiplayer arenas. Even games backed by significant industry players like Sony with their game Concord, have faced struggles post-release. To make an impact in the competitive gaming market, a DC Comics hero shooter game might need to introduce innovative features such as a comprehensive campaign or dedicated Player vs Environment (PVE) mode to carve out a niche for itself.
