  • The Wonder Woman game could fill the void left by the unsuccessful Arkham successor, offering familiar combat.

As a long-time fan of both Monolith Productions and Wonder Woman, I’m excitedly anticipating the release of Monolith’s upcoming Wonder Woman game. The buzz surrounding this project has been palpable since its initial reveal in 2021, despite the lack of updates since then. With DC’s video game department going through a rough patch, Monolith’s Wonder Woman could be the breath of fresh air that fans have been waiting for.

When Monolith unveiled their “Wonder Woman” game in December 2021, it sparked considerable enthusiasm. Despite the disappointing performance of “Wonder Woman 1984,” which had come out the year before, the rich history and enduring popularity of the character kept fans eager for her solo video game experience. Now, nearly three years after the announcement, Monolith’s “Wonder Woman” game has fallen off the radar. However, given the current circumstances, its release holds greater significance than ever.

After some tough times for DC’s video game division, Monolith’s upcoming Wonder Woman game is now a beacon of anticipation for fans. This means that Monolith faces immense expectations following its 2021 reveal. Although fans typically crave innovative gameplay and fresh features in new AAA games, it might benefit Monolith to stick with their strengths for Wonder Woman. Creating another game akin to the Batman: Arkham series could be the most effective approach.

Monolith Already Has Plenty of Experience with Arkham-Inspired gameplay

Monolith Productions, founded in 1997, has a rich history that some fans may not be aware of. The studio is responsible for creating several popular games throughout the years. In the early 2000s, Monolith gained recognition for its impressive lineup of first-person shooter titles, such as Alien Versus Predator 2, FEAR, and Condemned. However, in 2014, Monolith unveiled a game that outshone most of its previous releases.

In its debut in 2014, the elaborate and financially well-supported “Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor” action-adventure game, inspired by “The Lord of the Rings,” gained rave reviews from critics. Its combat system bore a strong resemblance to that of “Batman: Arkham” series, allowing players to engage in intense battles against Orcs, evade their attacks, and employ various magical tools to outsmart them. Although its 2017 follow-up, “Middle-earth: Shadow of War,” didn’t receive as many favorable reviews, the combat system remained an exciting feature that harkened back to the “Arkham” series.

Arkham-Inspired Gameplay Would Fit Wonder Woman Well

Monolith has already proven that it can take Batman: Arkham‘s combat and give it an exciting new spin, and that might be the best option for its upcoming Wonder Woman game. A superhero with increased strength, agility, and durability, Wonder Woman’s fighting style is usually depicted in the same way across DC media, showing the hero quickly bouncing between opponents, slashing them with her sword, bashing them with her shield, and whipping them with her lasso. This type of fast-paced combat perfectly lends itself to Batman: Arkham‘s Freeflow system.

Monolith’s Wonder Woman Could Fill a Much-Needed Niche

While Monolith using the Batman: Arkham combat formula for Wonder Woman could come across as lazy to some fans, there’s been a major shift recently that would probably cut those criticisms short. After years of waiting for a true successor to the Batman: Arkham series, Rocksteady released Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League at the start of this year. The reception to Suicide Squad has been infamously terrible, and many fans are now desperate for a return to Arkham‘s original formula. Monolith’s Wonder Woman game can offer that return to familiarity, and if it adds enough to its combat, it could even be the Arkham successor fans have been wanting for years.
