As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve seen a lot of fighting games come and go, but none have captured my heart quite like MultiVersus. The latest addition to its roster, Marceline the Vampire Queen, has taken my breath away, reminding me of the good old days of Adventure Time binge-watching sessions.
The game, named MultiVersus, has been impressing players with its consistent release of characters, more so than other fighting genre games. Since its relaunch in May last year, it’s introduced seven new characters in nearly eight months. Each character is a meticulously crafted and affectionate representation of their original source material. The latest character joining the game is no exception to this high-quality standard.
This week, Marceline, the Vampire Queen, known from the popular series Adventure Time, became part of the roster in the game MultiVersus as part of Season 4 updates. Similar to Raven, Marceline’s character in the game mirrors her appearance in her original Cartoon Network show, which will delight fans of the series. Even for those who aren’t avid viewers of the show, Marceline’s inclusion in the game marks a significant change in the game’s direction that suggests promising developments for future fighters.
Marceline’s Kit is a Great Sign for Things to Come in MultiVersus
Marceline Might Be the Start of a Good Trend for MultiVersus
Marceline is added to the lineup in the MultiVersus game, bringing along a collection of moves inspired by her memorable moments from the series. True to character, she utilizes her guitar in attacks and also employs stakes, as well as vampiric transformations. After marathon-watching all seasons of Adventure Time, she fits perfectly into the role she plays, which is fantastic for the evolution of the game’s fighter design.
In MultiVersus, fighters fall into four primary categories: Bruisers, Tanks, Assassins, and Mages. Despite being categorized as a Bruiser in the game, Marceline displays swiftness, nimbleness, and lethality that align with her character traits. This suggests that the developers at Player First Games prioritize staying true to characters over rigidly adhering to a traditional class system that might restrict a character’s potential abilities.
Developers Are Focusing on Adapting the Fighters Accurately Rather Than Getting Tied Up On The Class System
The classes effectively depict how these characters evolve in their roles, with Tank characters such as Jason being massive, slow-moving entities capable of delivering powerful blows akin to trucks, and Assassins like Stripe being swift, combative figures with fragile structures. Although these classes have proven effective throughout the game’s development, there has been an underlying concern that they might restrict the creative freedom of the design team when adapting characters authentically in the future.
Characters like Superman are often constrained by the rigid structure of their assigned roles within a system such as MultiVersus. Despite adjustments in his standing over time, Superman has consistently demonstrated exceptional toughness, ranking him as the third sturdiest character after Iron Giant and Jason. However, for someone renowned for being “faster than a speeding bullet,” Superman appears rather sluggish within the game. He possesses the force one would anticipate from a figure who can engage in combat with Darkseid, but his attacks are delivered so gradually that players must be strategic and rely heavily on armor to effectively execute most of his combos.
Marceline’s equipment indicates that game developers are moving away from restricting character designs based on traditional class systems. Her playstyle combines elements of both a bruiser and an assassin, demonstrating the potential for diverse, hybrid characters in the game. This not only adds variety to gameplay but also allows for more accurate adaptation of certain characters who may not neatly fit into predefined classes. The developers seem open to a broader, more complex approach to creating/designing fighters, as demonstrated by Marceline.
