Why Now Would Be the Perfect Time for an Injustice 3

As a long-time fan of both DC comics and video games, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at the prospect of a new Injustice game. Having grown up reading DC comics and playing Mortal Kombat, the idea of a crossover between these two worlds has always been a dream come true for me.

It’s being speculated that sales of the Khaos Reigns DLC and additional fighters for Mortal Kombat 1 have fallen short of expectations, potentially leading to the cancellation of future DLC for the fighting game by Warner Bros. Games. However, characters like Conan the Barbarian and the T-1000 are still slated to be released soon. If these rumors hold true, it could mean that NetherRealm Studios’ entire team might shift their focus towards a new project. While many anticipate this new game to be Mortal Kombat 2, recent developments in James Gunn’s DC Cinematic Universe have sparked speculation about the possibility of creating the next Injustice game: Injustice 3.

James Gunn’s DCU Could Lay the Foundation for a New Injustice Game

After facing significant criticism and financial losses with Zack Snyder’s DC Universe, Warner Bros. enlisted the renowned director James Gunn to essentially re-launch the DCU while preserving certain aspects from past films and series. Gunn’s 2021 movie, “The Suicide Squad,” and his 2022 show, “Peacemaker,” will primarily be part of the new DCU’s continuity, with the second season of “Peacemaker” due for release in Summer 2025. The rest of the DCU, however, is set to be rebooted and feature new actors portraying popular characters from the DC Comics universe, including both heroes and villains. This means that plotlines hinted at the end of previous movies like “Black Adam” and “Wonder Woman 1984” will likely not be resolved.

2023’s “Blue Beetle” movie is the initial project in Gunn’s DC Universe, but it was already being worked on before he took charge of the DC Cinematic Universe. The first completely fresh endeavor under his leadership is the 2024 series titled “Creature Commandos,” where a group of imprisoned monsters led by Amanda Waller are deployed to carry out risky missions. The upcoming film within the DCU is “Superman: Legacy,” set for release in Summer 2025, featuring David Corenswet as Superman. Other forthcoming DCU productions include “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” “The Brave and the Bold,” “The Authority,” “Lanterns,” “Paradise Lost,” “Booster Gold,” and many more.

As a dedicated gamer and DC Universe fan, I’ve got to share some exciting news: James Gunn himself has spilled the beans that the Justice League’s grand entrance at the end of ‘Peacemaker’ Season 1 doesn’t align with the main storyline of the DCU. That’s right, folks! It seems like the events in Peacemaker’s world might have a unique twist to them. Let’s see where this leads us next!

It’s been more than seven years since we saw Injustice 2 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Since then, two new Mortal Kombat games have dropped: Mortal Kombat 11 and Mortal Kombat 1. However, the Injustice story hasn’t just been confined to the gaming world. In 2018, DC published a six-issue comic sequel to the grim ending of Injustice 2, which was actually a crossover with He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. More recently in 2021, DC has released a fourteen-issue prequel comic titled Injustice: Year Zero, as well as an R-rated animated film based on the Injustice universe.

There’s been a buzz about the possibility of Injustice 3, but neither NetherRealm nor Warner Bros. have officially confirmed it yet. If they were to make an announcement about the game’s development by the end of 2024 or 2025, we might see its release in 2026. Characters from upcoming DC Universe projects could potentially be featured in Injustice 3. In fact, the previous game, Injustice 2, already incorporated characters connected to other DC films and projects, with the Suicide Squad playing a significant role in the game’s storyline following the release of the 2016 Suicide Squad movie. If developed, Injustice 3 could introduce new fighters like G.I. Robot, Doctor Phosphorus, Eric Frankenstein, and others. The developers might also create alternate costumes for characters based on DCU films, such as a costume inspired by Corenswet’s Superman.

DCU Character Roles in Injustice 3

In future installments of “Injustice,” such as “Injustice 3,” the characters from the DC Universe might assume diverse roles, depending on how NetherRealm handles the alternate endings of “Injustice 2.” For instance, the Creature Commandos could have minor roles in the conflict, much like the Suicide Squad was depicted in “Injustice 2.” Supergirl could be given a significant or leading role to align with her upcoming film, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” featuring Milly Alcock. The Authority could offer an intriguing perspective in “Injustice 3” as they may support Superman’s autocratic rule over Batman’s endeavors to reinstate democratic governments. Introducing DCU characters into the next “Injustice” game could broaden the DCU’s impact and enrich “Injustice”‘s renowned intricate narrative.
