After facing significant criticism and financial losses with Zack Snyder’s DC Universe, Warner Bros. enlisted the renowned director James Gunn to essentially re-launch the DCU while preserving certain aspects from past films and series. Gunn’s 2021 movie, “The Suicide Squad,” and his 2022 show, “Peacemaker,” will primarily be part of the new DCU’s continuity, with the second season of “Peacemaker” due for release in Summer 2025. The rest of the DCU, however, is set to be rebooted and feature new actors portraying popular characters from the DC Comics universe, including both heroes and villains. This means that plotlines hinted at the end of previous movies like “Black Adam” and “Wonder Woman 1984” will likely not be resolved.
2023’s “Blue Beetle” movie is the initial project in Gunn’s DC Universe, but it was already being worked on before he took charge of the DC Cinematic Universe. If they were to make an announcement about the game’s development by the end of 2024 or 2025, we might see its release in 2026. Characters from upcoming DC Universe projects could potentially be featured in Injustice 3. In fact, the previous game, Injustice 2, already incorporated characters connected to other DC films and projects, with the Suicide Squad playing a significant role in the game’s storyline following the release of the 2016 Suicide Squad movie. If developed, Injustice 3 could introduce new fighters like G.I. Robot, Doctor Phosphorus, Eric Frankenstein, and others. The developers might also create alternate costumes for characters based on DCU films, such as a costume inspired by Corenswet’s Superman.
DCU Character Roles in Injustice 3
In future installments of “Injustice,” such as “Injustice 3,” the characters from the DC Universe might assume diverse roles, depending on how NetherRealm handles the alternate endings of “Injustice 2.” For instance, the Creature Commandos could have minor roles in the conflict, much like the Suicide Squad was depicted in “Injustice 2.” Supergirl could be given a significant or leading role to align with her upcoming film, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” featuring Milly Alcock.
