But it wasn’t until Resident Evil Village that the series really opened up a mythological tome and redefined what a bioweapon could be. In this game, we encounter innovative twists on classic creatures like werewolves and vampires, combined with other spine-tingling horrors that are as different from the dull Molded we faced in Resident Evil 7 as night and day.
Indeed, while Resident Evil 7 may not boast a wide range of enemies, that’s not typically a trait shared by the entire Resident Evil series. Moreover, as demonstrated by Village, it’s hard to guess which grotesque creatures might show up in future Resident Evil games solely based on past enemy types. For instance, traditional zombies were once common in Resident Evil, but they’ve largely been replaced after being around for a while. Given their iconic status, let’s hope that zombies will always find a place in the Resident Evil series.
Resident Evil’s Zombies are Basic But Not without Endearing Character
As a dedicated fan, I’ve seen the undead, the reanimated, the living dead – you name it. The concept has been used so frequently that it sometimes feels overused, even trite. However, when it comes to the Resident Evil series, it’s not just about zombies. It’s about Yawn, Hunters, Chimeras, and colossal spiders, among other terrifying creatures.
But let’s not underestimate the role of zombies in this franchise. They may seem commonplace, but their impact is undeniable. The way Resident Evil portrays these undead beings truly sets it apart. It’s safe to say that the series wouldn’t be as iconic without them.
The “Itchy. Tasty.” diary entry stands out as a noteworthy zombie memento from the world of Resident Evil, and the zombie’s sidelong glance over its shoulder is an iconic visual element that continues to endure in Resident Evil lore.
Resident Evil’s Zombies are as Much Part of the Environment as They are Enemies
In my opinion, revisiting Resident Evil 2’s remake was like diving back into the world of relentless zombies that could turn narrow corridors into deadly traps for both Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield. Despite the abundance of these undead foes in the series, it’s hard to deny that they play a crucial role in what makes early Resident Evil games so unique. Even though there have been numerous creative enemy designs since then, zombies serving as targets for players or just another environmental challenge is part of what makes the early Resident Evil titles truly remarkable.
In the game Resident Evil, it’s crucial to thoroughly explore maps for missed items, and it is during these detailed searches that zombies often ambush players by making noises and wandering into their paths. The lycans in Resident Evil Village might be more dangerous, but they can’t match the strategic placement of a zombie who happens to be standing casually, blocking access to a desired entrance or stairway, especially when players are trying to conserve ammunition or defensive items.
It could seem somewhat simplistic if zombies reappeared in contemporary Resident Evil main games, given how fantastical the franchise’s adversaries have evolved. However, incorporating zombies as threats within a Resident Evil game remains an essential element of the series that hasn’t been completely abandoned. Dismissing zombies altogether would be a significant error as well.
