After years of wondering what happened, Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, has explained why they canceled their spy game, Agent. The game was first announced in 2009 at the E3 event and Rockstar described it as a groundbreaking project. However, it’s now clear that Agent went through five completely different versions before Rockstar ultimately decided to stop development.
Rockstar Games first announced a spy game for the PlayStation 3 sixteen years ago, but remained largely silent about it afterward. Many believed the project was sidelined so the studio could focus on Grand Theft Auto 5, which became a massive success. Although trademarks and company meetings hinted the game, called Agent, was still in development before GTA 5 launched, it became clear in recent years that Rockstar had abandoned it. Now, after years of mystery, fans finally know the reason why.
Rockstar Co-Founder Explains Why Agent Was Canceled
Man, it’s been a while, but Rockstar finally confirmed what we all suspected – Agent is officially dead. They just quietly removed it from their website back in 2021 without saying a word about why. But recently, Dan Houser, one of the founders of Rockstar, talked about it in an interview. He said they spent a lot of time trying to make an open-world spy game work, but it just never really clicked. He then confirmed he was talking about Agent specifically. So yeah, after all these years, it’s safe to say that game’s not happening.
I recently heard the developer talk about Agent, and it sounds like it went through a lot of changes – about five different versions, actually! They said the biggest problem was that it was an open-world game, and it just never really clicked. He compared it to spy movies, explaining those are usually really fast-paced with urgent missions – saving the world, stopping assassinations, that kind of thing. He said open-world games have those moments, but mostly you’re just… wandering around and doing your own thing, which didn’t quite fit what they were going for.
I was really fascinated to hear Sam Houser talk about some of the ideas Rockstar Games tried and ultimately scrapped. He explained they just couldn’t get an open-world spy game to work – it just didn’t feel right for them. And get this, they even played around with a medieval knights game at one point, but that one never took off either. It’s cool to hear about all the things they experiment with, even if they don’t always make it into a finished game!
As a big fan of Rockstar, I’ve always wondered about the games they didn’t make. It seems like they had a lot of cool ideas, but they wisely stuck with expanding the worlds we already love – things like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead. And honestly, it worked out amazingly! Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold over 215 million copies, and Red Dead Redemption 2 has flown off shelves with over 77 million sold since 2018. Now, everyone – myself included – is counting down the days until Grand Theft Auto 6 comes out on May 26, 2026. It’s shaping up to be absolutely huge!
