Why Sims 4 Needs a New Game Pack Now More Than Ever

Why Sims 4 Needs a New Game Pack Now More Than Ever

As a dedicated Sims fan since the early days, I can’t help but feel a tad disappointed with the recent turn of events regarding The Sims 5 and Project Rene. I’ve spent countless hours crafting virtual lives, nurturing relationships, and watching my sims navigate through various careers and life stages. It was only natural to assume that we were on the cusp of a new adventure in this beloved universe.

As a passionate fan of Maxis’ iconic life simulator series, The Sims, I’ve been buzzing with anticipation about Project Rene and the future direction of the franchise. However, my spirits took a slight dip when Electronic Arts unveiled their roadmap for the franchise, noticeably omitting any mention of The Sims 5. It appears that there were some miscommunications earlier on, which EA is now addressing.

Given that it’s been over ten years since The Sims 4 was launched, it wasn’t surprising when people assumed Electronic Arts (EA) might be working on a new Sims game and eventually phasing out the current one after its release. This assumption was fueled by the announcement of Project Rene, which many believed to be the confirmation of The Sims 5. However, it appears that Project Rene is actually EA’s latest venture into multiplayer gaming, similar in spirit to earlier games like The Sims Online and The Sims Freeplay. Since Project Rene is a unique experience and The Sims 5 doesn’t exist yet, EA will need to compensate by offering more expansive packages for The Sims 4 soon.

Electronic Arts Needs to Pay Attention to the Finer Details in The Sims 4

The idea that EA was developing the next installment of the series didn’t just stem from the growing gap in release dates or speculation after significant leaks of Project Rene towards the end of 2022 and again last year. Instead, a large part of its plausibility comes from the fact that the developer has mainly focused on cosmetic changes over the past few years, consistently releasing Expansion Packs (EPs) and Stuff Packs. Notably, there have been no Game Packs released for about two and a half years now, suggesting they might be working on something new.

It’s been pointed out that Expansion Packs (EPs) have essentially taken over the role once filled by Game Packs, as six expansions since the last GP (“Werewolves”) have introduced fresh settings to “The Sims,” complete with exclusive storylines. To illustrate, the latest EP addition, “Life and Death,” brought a touch of style to the Sim afterlife and even offered players with a dark inclination the chance to become a Grim Reaper. However, it’s essential to note that Expansion Packs differ from Game Packs in terms of the depth of themes they offer.

Game Packs’ Thematic Focus Makes Them a Priority Area Going Forward

Instead of adding entirely new gameplay elements and a variety of construction/purchase options, which is often the case with expansions, game packs primarily focus on enhancing a specific niche or theme. For instance, The Sims 4’s Dine Out pack centered around the restaurant experience, introducing aspects like daily management and staff coordination. However, it’s unfortunate that Electronic Arts hasn’t returned to this particular category for quite some time. This could be due to the significant price difference between game packs (GPs) and expansion packs (EPs), with EPs typically costing more on average, possibly explaining why GPs have been taking a backseat recently.

Given that Project Rene doesn’t have a confirmed release date and there are no solid plans for The Sims 5 as of now, Electronic Arts might want to adapt their strategy. Previously, Game Packs were released annually, but with the unexplained pause, players will be more inclined to continue playing The Sims 4 if they receive a steady stream of new content. The current expansion pack schedule is beneficial, but adding more game packs could strengthen the developer’s efforts. Developing specialized areas like cars, which has been a frequently requested feature, using a focused approach could significantly enhance The Sims 4, making game packs an essential part of Electronic Arts’ future strategy.
