Why Slay the Spire Fans Must Check Out Mage Food Truck

Ever since the introduction of “StarCraft: The Board Game” and “Dominion” in 2007 and 2008 respectively, the genre of deck-building games has flourished and broadened its horizons significantly. Not only has this genre made its way into video games, but it has continually evolved with innovative twists, maintaining a strong following throughout. Some of the most well-liked deck-building games currently are “Balatro” and “Slay the Spire”, with the latter even getting a sequel this year. This genre is rich with variety; those who appreciate fantasy in the vein of Dungeons & Dragons, have a soft spot for culinary adventures, or simply enjoy deck-building might want to watch the development of “Mage Food Truck“.

The mobile game titled “Mage Food Truck” is being created by Adam Stewart, who is the lone developer at One Man Left Studios. Game Rant recently had a chat with Stewart about the unique indie style of development behind

Mage Food Truck is a Strong Amalgamation of Genres and Fantasies

The Mage Food Truck game is a solo adventure set in a deckbuilding, roguelike format. During gameplay, you’ll take on various shifts as the chef and manager of your magical food truck, serving customers through morning, day, and night. However, as the sun sets, the realm becomes increasingly dangerous for your food truck business.

Your goal is to navigate this “hangry” fantasy land, gathering ingredients, fulfilling orders, and dodging monsters along the way. The game ends when you’ve completed all three shifts or your truck encounters a fantastical disaster. At that point, customers will rate your service from 0-3 stars, which you can use to upgrade your deck in a shop.

Similar to other roguelike games, the allure of “one more run” often proves too strong as players strive to improve their strategies and climb the ranks.

The fundamental gameplay in Mage Food Truck is reminiscent of both roguelike and deckbuilding games, but it also shares similarities with Space Food Truck, an earlier release from One Man Left Studios. Unlike its predecessor which was set in space and intended for multiplayer, Mage Food Truck takes place in a Dungeons and Dragons-like fantasy world, catering to single players. Interestingly, the bard character in Mage Food Truck is inspired by Stewart’s personal DnD character. It’s noteworthy that Stewart has made numerous Quality of Life enhancements in Mage Food Truck, which fans of Space Food Truck are likely to appreciate. In essence, Mage Food Truck appeals to a broad audience, and when asked about the intended demographic, Stewart had plenty to say on the matter.

Board game enthusiasts, both digital and physical, take note! If you’ve enjoyed games like Slay the Spire or Dominion, this new addition to that genre is definitely worth checking out. I think fans of Dungeons & Dragons and fantasy themes will find it particularly appealing. And for those who have previously enjoyed Space Food Truck, there are numerous quality-of-life improvements in store.

Additionally, individuals who are passionate about operating food trucks, or have harbored such dreams in the past, should take note of this as well. This isn’t about a band of murderous adventurers running a food truck amidst high-stakes, life-altering challenges in a tabletop game campaign. Instead, it offers an enjoyable blend of deckbuilding similar to the game “Slay the Spire”, engaging roguelike mechanics, a dash of classic “Dungeons and Dragons” fantasy, and a smidgen of food service (there’s even a vegetarian option available). In essence, this could prove quite appealing.
