Steam recently updated how it shows game reviews, and users have noticed a difference. Previously, Steam separated reviews into ‘Recent’ and ‘All Reviews,’ but now it often displays only reviews written in English.
Steam is constantly being updated to provide a better experience for its users. They recently redesigned the store pages in November, and this year, Steam started letting people know which games were made with the help of artificial intelligence.
Steam Shows English Reviews Instead of Overall
via Steam
Most games on the Steam store feature reviews from players, as long as some have been submitted. Steam used to display both the overall average review score and the recent average at the top of each game’s page. However, Steam recently changed this to prioritize showing reviews from the user’s language – with most players using either English or Simplified Chinese. Some users are worried this change might not give an accurate picture of overall opinions, as it limits the reviews considered when calculating averages.
Why Steam Reviews Changed
Steam changed how reviews are displayed in August 2025 to address potential differences in player experiences based on language. Poorly translated games often receive negative reviews in languages other than English, simply because the translation makes them harder to enjoy. Cultural differences can also impact how players perceive a game. To ensure users see reviews from people with similar experiences, Steam now automatically shows reviews in the user’s preferred language.
How to Revert Steam Reviews Back to Showing Everything
Steam made it easy to view all user reviews, anticipating that players would want to see them all.
Okay, so if you want to check out all the reviews for a game, no matter what language people wrote them in, or if you’re curious about the overall average rating, here’s how I do it. It’s pretty simple, actually.
via Steam When looking at a game on Steam, you’ll find reviews on the right side of the screen. These are usually sorted to show the “Recent Reviews” first, and then filtered to show reviews written in your language. To see all reviews, scroll down to the “Customer Reviews” section, typically located near the bottom of the page, below the system requirements and related games. At the top of this section, Steam displays how many reviews are in your language, the most recent reviews, and the total number of reviews across all languages, along with an average rating for each.
via Steam You can easily view all reviews in any language. Just click the “Language” dropdown and change the setting from “Your Languages” to “All Languages”. If you only want to see reviews in a particular language, select it from the list. You can also see average ratings for each language. For instance, Team Fortress 2 has over 725,000 English reviews with a “Very Positive” average, but only 8,000 Thai reviews, which still average “Overwhelmingly Positive”.
As a longtime Steam user, I’ve really noticed how much better it’s gotten at helping you find games you’ll love. They added some great features in 2025, like accessibility filters that let you easily find games that work for you. But my favorite addition was the personal calendar – it shows you upcoming releases Steam thinks you’ll enjoy based on what you’ve played before. It’s like having a personal game recommendation system!
