Over the last few days, it’s hard not to notice the excitement surrounding Sung Jinwoo’s fight against the Ant King, marking the finale of the much-awaited Jeju Island Raid arc in “Solo Leveling”. To express it simply, we might have just experienced something extraordinary. A-1 Pictures certainly delivered in “Solo Leveling Season 2 -Rise from Shadows-“, episode 12, offering some of the best animation likely to grace our screens this year. It was a visually stunning spectacle that seemed familiar, only to shatter those expectations with an epic anime battle that redefined the genre.

In the captivating world of “Solo Leveling,” it wasn’t just the stunning visuals that left an indelible mark, but rather the intricate detail and rich tapestry of themes skillfully woven into each scene. The epic battle between Sung Jinwoo and The Ant King was a masterful delving into thought-provoking thematic elements that had been meticulously crafted throughout the series’ duration. Here’s why this confrontation served as a profound examination of some of the most intriguing themes the series has to offer.

Setting the Scene

How Jinwoo and the Ant King Were Positioned Prior to the Battle

In episode 10 of Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow-, we discover that the Ant Queen devises a desperate plan to produce one exceptional offspring capable of saving their species, which is facing starvation on Jeju Island. This extraordinary ant will be more powerful than any previous generation due to its unique traits. The worsening conditions on the island led the ants to develop abilities like flight and bipedalism. These traits are passed down by the Queen through a process called phagogenesis, which involves her absorbing characteristics from consumed organisms and passing them onto her offspring, thus increasing genetic diversity. This innovative strategy births the Ant King, a strong bipedal ant with a black exoskeleton, who embodies the best traits of each previous generation, as well as an advanced form of phagogenesis, now known as Gluttony. By consuming his adversaries, the Ant King can selectively incorporate their abilities into his Skill Tree, thereby accelerating his own evolution in real time.

In the storyline, the character of the Ant King is juxtaposed with the main character Sung Jinwoo, revealing several comparable aspects, such as their shared color scheme. The Ant King’s initial roar releases a red-purple aura, which symbolizes the Ant King as an equally powerful figure to Jinwoo, whose aura turns purple after assuming the role of the Shadow Monarch at the end of season one.

As the Ant King wreaked havoc across Jeju Island, he eliminated 7 out of the 11 S-Rankers sent by Japan’s most formidable Hunter Guild, the Draw Sword Guild. When the Ant King confronted Japan’s strongest Hunter, Ryuji Gotō (an S-Ranker), Gotō experienced a similar sensation to the extreme fear and dread he felt when sparring with Jinwoo. However, in the animated adaptation of this encounter, the immediate response of Gotō to Jinwoo is toned down to emphasize the parallel between the Ant King and Jinwoo; incorporating both reactions might have more effectively conveyed the similarity.

Oh, the Humanity!

Who’s the Human and Who’s the Monster, Really?

In episode 11 of “Solo Leveling Season 2 -Arise from the Shadow-,” the narrative seems to shift focus towards the Ant King, with minimal screen time for Sung Jinwoo. This transition is striking, given that the Ant King’s actions and mental state are the primary focus. After the Ant Queen is slain by the Korean S-Rank strike team, the Ant King, enraged, wreaks havoc on the group, even killing Healer Byung-Gu and consuming his head. This act, granted by Gluttony, also allows the Ant King to speak.

The Ant King’s actions throughout these episodes suggest a degree of humanity. His response to the death of his mother and his obsession with observing the Queen’s final moments hint at emotions not typically associated with ants. The gruesome scene depicting the Ant King, with his mandibles stained green by the Queen’s blood, and the dramatic turn of his head under a fish-eye lens effect, evoke feelings of anger and despair reminiscent of a protagonist.

The use of the song “DARK ARIA” in this scene is significant because it has been linked to Jinwoo being pushed to the brink. Therefore, its use here serves as evidence of the Ant King’s emotional turmoil, underscoring the striking similarity between him and Jinwoo, despite their opposing roles.

The Ant King becomes even more relatable due to his struggle against Sung Jinwoo. Unlike typical portrayals where we might hear more about the main character’s thoughts, here we delve deeper into the Ant King’s mind instead. This shift in perspective brings us closer to understanding the Ant King as a character and follows his shifting attitude throughout the fight, starting from arrogant superiority, moving on to admiration, and eventually terror. This parallels Gotō’s experience when facing Jinwoo, as well as when he faced the Ant King. The Ant King’s shock at Jinwoo’s power creates a situation where the monster feels like it is battling another monster, which adds depth to the story’s theme. Moreover, the Ant King’s use of abilities from eaten Hunters, such as Byung Gu’s healing, emphasizes the idea that Jinwoo is the true monster, as these abilities are akin to him relying on a party to defeat a powerful Raid Boss. The Ant King’s desperate attempt to escape, reminiscent of a terrified scream, further complicates the human-monster dynamic in this battle, as Jinwoo relentlessly pursues and mercilessly slaughters the Ant King.

The Colours of a Fated Battle

How Lines Darting About the Screen Added to a Brilliant Fight

In the battle against the Ant King, Sung Jinwoo faces an adversary yet again, much like his intense clash with Igris at the end of Solo Leveling‘s first season. The color palette is dominated by red and blue, a scheme that often appears in Jinwoo’s most significant fights. Red symbolizes intensity, passion, and aggression, while blue represents calmness, serenity, and logic – two contrasting ideas. This contrast is emphasized during Jinwoo’s battle with the Ant King, as their high-speed combat turns them into swift streaks of red and blue light on the screen at times. When they collide, a purple hue emerges, symbolizing Jinwoo after he becomes the Shadow Monarch’s vessel.

In these sections of the fight, the intensity reaches unprecedented levels, making it a pivotal point in the series’ history. As characters and fans alike watch the conflict unfold, their jaws drop simultaneously in awe. What makes these parts particularly fascinating is how the mere trajectory of lines can convey so much about the characters. Jinwoo’s blue lines flow smoothly, clearly, logically, and even elegantly, reflecting his calm, rational demeanor. On the other hand, the Ant King’s movements are erratic, suggesting a struggle between man and beast. However, as previously mentioned, there’s a twist: the Ant King starts behaving more like a human character as the fight continues, adding complexity to their relationship.

It seems my purpose is to be the most formidable, consuming all that I encounter to grow stronger. I should ascend to the throne, but somehow…

– The Ant King

Crushed Like a Bug

The Ant King is Dethroned

In a final, desperate attempt, the Ant King summons his drones, swarming into their nest where they met an abrupt end at the hands of Jinwoo’s most powerful Shadow warriors. Kargalgan unleashed a torrent of fire magic, creating a fiery barrier that left the Ant King stunned and trying to flee, only to be struck down by a swift motion from the Ruler’s Hand. As flames danced around him, the defeated Ant King gazed up at Sung Jinwoo, a scene that solidified Jinwoo’s image as a terrifying monster – his glowing eyes and the raging inferno evoking feelings of dread reminiscent of a demonic figure or “the devil.” The battlefield transformed into a symbol of Hell, reflecting the knowledge gained by the Ant King through Gluttony. In its desperation to escape Jinwoo, the Ant King abandoned its human-like traits, suggesting its understanding that it was up against an unstoppable evil.

The swift scurrying, reminiscent of an insect, hinted at a primal instinct triggered by overwhelming terror, as observed in Jinwoo. His ruthless elimination of what was no longer a threatening foe demonstrated an absence of the empathetic decision-making typically human. Despite viewers’ potential empathy towards the insect, given our immersion into its perspective throughout the episode, Jinwoo, the enigmatic character, acted without hesitation, seemingly addressing Barca’s season-opening query about his humanity or lack thereof. The battle was rich in intricate details and subtle cues, earning it recognition among some of the most exceptional fights ever presented in this medium.

Season 2 of “Solo Leveling” titled “Emerge from Shadows” can now be streamed on Crunchyroll. The concluding episode will be aired on March 29th.
