Why The Order: 1886 Didn’t Get a Sequel As Planned

Back in 2015, I got my hands on a captivating gem, The Order: 1886, exclusively for PlayStation 4. Developed by Ready at Dawn, it was a standalone adventure that sucked me into its unique, single-player narrative. It transported me to an alternate reality of Victorian London in the year 1886, where I battled not just ordinary foes, but also supernatural creatures like werewolves and vampires. Quite an experience!

As a passionate fan, I can’t forget the immersive cinematic experience that The Order: 1886 offered, making me feel like I was watching a movie rather than playing a game, all thanks to its aspect ratio. However, despite plans for a follow-up title by Ready at Dawn, it never materialized. In a recent interview, one of the co-founders shed light on the reasons why a sequel was never released.

Missed it by That Much

During an interview with MinnMax, as reported by VGC, Andrea Pessino of Ready at Dawn revealed why The Order: 1886 did not get a sequel, despite fans’ requests over the years. In the ensuing 24-minute conversation, Pessino explained the reasons behind the game’s lack of follow-up.

I don’t think it was the sales – I think it was the critical reception.

Sony takes great pride in its work, and with good reason. If the initial response from critics had occurred as early as the ’70s, I’m confident that a sequel would have followed.

1886 ended up with a mediocre Metacritic score of 63 after its release, surprising many given that it performed well during testing and received positive feedback from initial previews and mock interviews, as Pessino noted.

Originally, it was intended for The Order: 1886’s sequel to be released in 2018. However, due to adjustments made by Ready at Dawn to meet Sony’s deadlines, some of the game’s interactive and immersive parts ended up being converted into cinematic scenes instead.

One of the problems is that so much was cut.

As a gamer, I found myself yearning for a more immersive experience since many nuanced story elements seemed to have been trimmed away, leaving behind what felt like a cinematic presentation rather than an interactive journey.

We needed another year, that’s the reality. We needed at least one more year, we didn’t get it.

The Order: 1886 is a game that deserves a sequel and can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with classics like Bloodborne, both being PlayStation 4 titles that gamers around the globe have longed for a new installment in their stories for quite some time.
