Hogwarts Legacy spins a compelling tale as an open-world action RPG, offering a student’s Hogwarts experience. While some optional activities for collection might feel repetitive and mundane, the main storyline focusing on Ancient Magic, classes, and learning is where Hogwarts Legacy truly shines. Even without additional locations, just Hogwarts and Hogsmeade would be satisfying. However, the vast and intriguing landscape of the Scottish Highlands keeps players engaged and curious.
In the game Hogwarts Legacy, the Room of Requirement aligns closely with its original storyline while catering to the player’s convenience. The Room of Requirement and the expansive Highlands are intertwined, making them mutually beneficial for players aiming for a 100% completion on their Field Guide or collection catalogues. However, it could have added an extra layer of immersion if potion-making, plant cultivation, gear crafting, and beast tending were tied to specific classes like Potions, Herbology, Hogsmeade, and Beasts/Care of Magical Creatures respectively.
Hogwarts Legacy’s Room of Requirement is a Gracious, Preposterous Blessing
Without any apparent purpose, it seems, the teachers at Hogwarts Legacy are unusually eager to grant the protagonist unique privileges. It’s almost astonishing how they set aside considerable time to devise additional tasks for them, but the Room of Requirement, not forgetting a house-elf named Deek, represents an unusually generous gift from Professor Matilda Weasley to the player. This is quite unexpected and seems a bit overly generous.
In other words, if players often attend the same classes, they’ll consistently have set times for gathering identical resources and caring for similar creatures. However, these activities take place in distinct environments unique to each player. Additionally, reaching the Room of Requirement isn’t more accessible; players must navigate Hogwarts’ map to quickly travel there, just as they would need to traverse the map to attend different classes.
As new assignments from teachers motivate students to participate in classes or even consult with their professors directly, it’s also worth noting that while the Room is an attractive and versatile workspace, it may feel cluttered when multiple Vivariums are consecutively introduced and updated over time.
Hogwarts Legacy’s Room of Requirement and Vivariums are Fat to Be Trimmed
In a potential sequel, the Room of Requirement and its Vivariums might not be the best addition due to the problematic nature of the gear system in Hogwarts Legacy. Similar to many open-world RPGs, players frequently come across new equipment with superior stats or characteristics that quickly overshadow the stats on previously found and equipped gear. As a result, the process of crafting upgrades or traits for clothing items becomes largely unnecessary. Traits can be beneficial in late-game play if players wish to tailor their gameplay style, but these upgrades ultimately have minimal impact on combat effectiveness.
Maintaining three vivariums and gathering beast resources becomes significantly more laborious for players who aim for 100% completion in Field Guide challenges. This is because the effort rarely or never translates into improved gear or gameplay, as legendary-rarity gear is abundant and easily obtained.
If a potential sequel to Hogwarts Legacy addresses and enhances the gear system from the first game in a way that supports and validates four distinct Vivariums, there might be a case for maintaining the Room, although it would remain challenging to justify narratively why the player can access it again. However, if the game prioritizes classes and interactions with classmates or professors consistently throughout the entire experience, instead of just at the beginning, and eliminates the need for frequent visits to the Room of Requirement, it could strengthen this focus and make the game more immersive.
