Summary
- Boruto’s introduction of Scientific Ninja Tools revolutionized combat with advanced technology.
- The series abandoned the potential of Scientific Ninja Tools for alien threats and bionic ninjas.
- Tenten’s character could have been enhanced by taking on Katasuke Tono’s role in Boruto’s story.
As Boruto Uzumaki, son of renowned character Naruto Uzumaki, stepped into his own world, readers and viewers eagerly anticipated the thrilling journeys he would embark upon in both the comic book Boruto and its upcoming anime adaptation. When Boruto burst onto the scene with sophisticated technology – specifically Scientific Ninja Tools – fans were taken aback to discover that the new generation of ninjas weren’t just exceptionally skilled but also proficient in using a variety of innovative gadgets. And as the Otsutsuki clan re-emerged as a potential threat, it became clear to fans that this Scientific Ninja Tool craze was merely the surface of what lay hidden beneath.
In the world of Naruto, innovations popularized by Katasuke Tono, a Jonin from Konoha, and further advanced by Kara scientist Amado Sanzu, are set to progress beyond simple chakra-storing scrolls to full-fledged cybernetic enhancements. This development underscores the need for more than just chakra and ninjutsu in Naruto’s world to combat its new alien adversaries. However, the Scientific Ninja Tool, a central aspect of these advancements, seems to be at the heart of an unnecessary character in the series.
Enter The Scientific Ninja Tool
Game-Changing Combat Tech In Boruto’s Futuristic Era
Scientific Ninja Tools were originally divided into four main categories. There were Chakra-storing Condenser Types which could fire sealed jutsu, Bionic Prosthetic Types that had chakra channels, Amplification Types to boost physical abilities, and Advanced Technology Types that were upgraded ninja tools. Boruto frequently employs the Shinobi Gauntlet, a Condenser Type tool suggested by its creator Katasuke Tono. This gauntlet allows users to fire scroll cartridges containing high-level Ninjutsu.
One memorable scene from Boruto’s anime and novel series is when Naruto Uzumaki forbids his son, Boruto, from using the Shinobi Gauntlet during the Chunin Exams. In both the animated and written versions of this story arc, Naruto restricts the use of such tools to maintain the traditional purpose of the Chunin Exams, which is to cultivate shinobi abilities (anime) or only permit their use after widespread public acceptance (novel). This decision is rooted in the history of these tools, as they were only recently introduced following the Fourth Great Ninja War. During this conflict, information about the tools and their operations was declassified due to increased cooperation among hidden villages.
Shinobi-Ware And Shinjutsu Stole The Hype
Short-Lived Plot Hook That Didn’t Live Up To Expectations
The disqualification incident involving Boruto and Naruto, followed by Momoshiki’s attack on Konoha, served as an intriguing beginning to the youngster’s tale. At that time, there were many discussions about whether Scientific Ninja Tools would play a larger role in the Naruto universe – could ordinary citizens now perform ninjutsu? How might this change people’s views of Hidden Villages? Would individuals harboring animosity towards Hidden Villages use these tools for their own advantage? In a way reminiscent of The Legend of Korra’s resentment against Benders, Boruto’s Scientific Ninja Tools had the potential to disrupt the political and social structures within the Hidden Villages.
Regrettably, the prospective uses of Scientific Ninja Tools for exploring Naruto’s world were swapped out for extraterrestrials and a covert ninja society with bionic members. Although these “bionic ninjas” were technically enhanced Bionic Type Tools called Shinobi-Ware, the transition from “specialized ninja tools” to “ninja cyborgs” seemed inevitable as Boruto’s storylines progressed and introduced alien ninjas with extraordinary powers. And when the new major antagonists in Boruto appeared capable of performing Shinjutsu without hand seals (and were apparently the precursors of all Ninjutsu), traditional Scientific Ninja Tools became obsolete, merely becoming yesterday’s narrative devices.
Enter Katasuke Tono
The Prodigious World-Renowned Expert On Scientific Ninja Tools
Given that Scientific Ninja Tools have taken center stage in the Boruto series, it’s only fitting that the show’s top experts on these technologies would be exclusive characters within the storyline. Specifically, Amado Sanzu is depicted as the mastermind behind Kara’s Shinobi-Ware, while Katasuke Tono heads Konoha’s Scientific Ninja Weapons team. Although not much is known about Katasuke, he is recognized for his exceptional intelligence, bordering on genius level. Despite his quirky and humorous personality, Katasuke appears to be a competent shinobi. His passion for improving Konoha has led to the creation of revolutionary prosthetics and the mighty Shinobi Gauntlet.
Regrettably for Katasuke, he falls victim to brainwashing by Kara, orchestrated by his old patient from Kirigakure-nin during the Fourth Great Ninja War – none other than Ao. Despite Konoha’s efforts in freeing him from this mental control, Katasuke is plagued with guilt and intensifies his work on developing sophisticated tools. One of his latest inventions mirrors Momoshiki Otsutsuki’s ability, capturing Ninjutsu, although they have yet to decipher the mechanism for releasing the jutsu once it’s been absorbed by this new tool.
Enter Tenten, Whose Role In Boruto Double-Downs On Disappointing Character Development
An Owner Of A Failing Weapons Shop Is A Disservice To Her Character
It’s logical for the show, Boruto, to have its own set of characters to cater to both old Naruto fans and new viewers, but the lack of proper development for certain shinobi in the original series might leave fans questioning why these characters were sidelined for a fresh cast. For instance, Tenten, who was initially presented as Konoha Eleven’s weapons specialist but later seemed insignificant when grander and flashier ninjutsu came into play. This is one example of underdeveloped characters from the original series.
In the Naruto series, Tenten has long been criticized for her underdeveloped character, which has contributed to the perception that Kishimoto’s female characters are not well-rounded. Even when Temari beats up Tenten with just a breeze, her role becomes insignificant in the intense battles and encounters with alien ninjas during Shippuden. In Boruto, it appears her disappointing character arc continues, as her expertise in weapons is now limited to owning a struggling weapon shop. When she does appear in the series, it’s often to depict her shop’s financial struggles, being affected by genjutsu or getting hit by enemy attacks.
Why Not Have Another Character Take Tono’s Role?
Katasuke Tono’s Character Is A Worthwhile Upgrade For Tenten
In Boruto, it’s fascinating to witness the debut of new ninja skills with advanced technology. However, given her expertise in weaponry from her time in the Konoha Eleven, Tenten seems ideally suited for Katasuke Tono’s role. Although she may not have had much screen time in the Naruto series, Tenten’s mastery of various shinobi weapons, her ability to store and modify them using scrolls and special effects, make her an expert in weapons with wire strings and explosive tags. In other words, when it comes to weapons that require precision or increased power, Tenten is the one to turn to.
Apart from being exceptionally skilled and versatile in marksmanship, summoning, and weapon handling, Tenten stands out by her ability to summon and control multiple puppets without the conventional use of chakra threads. She demonstrates remarkable aptitude in wielding weapons that she has merely read about. Although Tenten’s role in combat is not as prominent in the Naruto storyline, it’s plausible that she would contribute to future weapon development discussions, considering her unique abilities, to prevent another Great Ninja War from occurring.
Tenten Is A Victim Of Circumstances
Poor Writing And Poor Matchups Didn’t Help Her Shine
It’s important to note that just because Tenten doesn’t appear to focus intensely on weapon innovations, like Katasuke Tono or Amado Sanzu, it doesn’t necessarily mean she’s less capable. In fact, the absence of a “training” arc for her, and any chance to demonstrate her growth compared to her peers, highlights the unfair treatment she’s received in terms of writing and plot development. The indication that Tenten has been disadvantaged is clear when we look at her matchup against Temari – Tenten hasn’t been given a fair chance to outsmart an area-of-effect user like Shikamaru has.
To put it simply, when Tenten’s most impactful storylines were centered around comedic arcs involving bizarre weaponry, fans realized that her character might not receive substantial growth. This is unfortunate since Tenten, being one of the most authentic female ninjas in the series, was the only one who regularly employed ninja weapons throughout her career. If Tenten had assumed Katasuke Tono’s role, her proficient use of ninja weapons could have provided a foundation for a much-anticipated career leap.
Could Have Been A Quarter-Life Crisis Success Story
Earn A Specialist Rank Much Like Her Konoha Eleven Batchmates
In the anime series Boruto, Tenten showcases her skill in operating sophisticated puppet weaponry during the Chunin Exams. Given that she may not have had much combat experience due to the peaceful setting in Naruto, it’s possible that this break from war allowed her to focus on weapons research and development in Boruto.
In simpler terms, this storyline, known as “The Locus of Konoha” arc, is where Tenten got the opportunity to delve into weapons research. During this arc, Tenten, along with Neji and Naruto, were sent to Io and the Konoha Tool Research Lab to assess new ninja weapons. It was during this mission that Tenten had to learn how to use the massive Jijanda in battle, a task she successfully accomplished, showcasing her expertise as a weapons specialist. Had she chosen to stay, Tenten could have trained under Io and potentially become a weapons researcher herself in the future, similar to Sakura’s role as Konoha’s top medical-nin after her apprenticeship with Tsunade.
A More Meaningful Denki Kaminarimon Apprenticeship
Her Own Past Could Have Been The Source Of Lessons
In contrast to being an anime exclusive character, Denki Kaminarimon stands out among Boruto’s new generation peers due to his distinctive traits. Initially timid and reserved, Denki demonstrates his shinobi abilities by exhibiting a prodigious intellect. His passion for computers leads him to closely monitor the talents of his classmates, and his tactical and technological prowess catches the attention of both Sai and Katasuke – with Sai commenting on Denki’s strategic skills being at Chunin level, while Katasuke allows him to design his own set of Scientific Ninja Tools for the Chunin Exams. In comparison to Boruto’s Shinobi Gauntlet, Denki’s homemade suit is a valuable asset in the tournament.
It’s intriguing to consider that Tenten, with her shared history, could have been an effective mentor for Denki. Due to being overshadowed by other exceptional kunoichi in her generation, Tenten often faced tough matches and losses. Similarly, Denki lacks physical prowess and natural abilities, instead relying on his intellect to keep up with others. If Tenten had guided Denki, she could have provided him with valuable insights similar to Boruto’s, but in a way that might have made Denki seem more self-reliant and potentially helped Tenten find closure for her own struggles.
Could Make A More Impactful Kara Introduction
A Brainwashed Tenten Could Have Been An Interesting Arc
One of the early demonstrations of Kara’s chilling abilities was seen when Ao and Kashin Koji manipulated Katasuke into revealing crucial information about the village, a decision he later regretted throughout the series. Changing Katasuke into Tenten initially could have added more intensity to understanding Kara’s operations since Ino’s subsequent investigation of Katasuke would have been more dramatic given her future relationship with Tenten.
It’s also significant to examine how this situation aligns with the Chunin Exams and Versus Momoshiki Arc, as these storylines often focus on the transition of power from one generation to the next. When Boruto defeats the Otsutsuki threat, temporary disagreements among the Konoha Eleven could arise, but resolving them would help strengthen their bonds. This process could ultimately lead to more impactful mentorship for Boruto and his peers.
A More Meaningful Involvement With Amado
Tenten’s Pre-War Sentiments Could Clash With Amado’s Modernity
When Amado is presented as Kara’s primary resource for Shinobi-Ware, even Katasuke is struck by the character’s perspective on Scientific Ninja Tools. Regrettably, Amado’s understanding of the Otsutsuki overshadows Katasuke right away, making him responsible for Kawaki’s enhancements and examining Boruto’s Kama during the early phases of the narrative. Even though Tenten steps in to replace Katasuke, fans might have appreciated more substantial conversations between them, given their roles as “weapon creators.
In a different phrasing: Since Amado was forced to create Shinobi-Gear for Isshiki’s daughter, he might have rationalized unscrupulous actions. However, Tenten’s involvement in the Fourth Great Ninja War could serve as a balance to mitigate such potential consequences. If Tenten eventually takes a backseat, the subtle conflict between them could still spark some philosophical discussions on Scientific Ninja Tools, ensuring that this technology gains some attention amidst Shinjutsu and Otsutsuki affairs.
