Summary
- Thunderbolts* shocked fans by killing off [SPOILER].
- Director Schreier explained that the instant death was to add shock value and needed resonance in the film.
- Killing [SPOILER] was a tough but impactful decision.
The opening surprise of Thunderbolts left spectators stunned, as it swiftly eliminated one of the presumed leading characters. Director Jake Schreier shared his reasoning behind this dramatic decision.
Antonia Dreykov, also known as Taskmaster, is played by Olga Kurylenko within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). She first appeared in the MCU during the year 2021, in the film Black Widow. The character of Taskmaster is the daughter of General Dreykov, who masterminded the Red Room, an organization that brainwashed young women and trained them to be assassins, such as Natasha Romanoff, more commonly known as Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). It was believed that she had been killed when Natasha destroyed Dreykov’s office. However, it was revealed that she had survived and was transformed into a weapon through technological implants. In the upcoming film Thunderbolts, which features a group of reformed villains, many assumed that she would survive due to the nature of the storyline. To everyone’s surprise, though, she had less screen time among the main characters.
The director of Thunderbolts recently chatted with The New York Times about various aspects of the film. When asked why there was so much focus on Taskmaster in the promotional materials, despite her having just one scene and being killed quickly, he admitted that it had been a difficult choice because many fans care deeply about the character. He further explained that they decided to kill off Taskmaster after realizing the movie could use more violence and bloodshed. However, since the film aimed to portray individuals who were professionals at taking lives, killing one of the key characters was necessary for this story to unfold effectively on the big screen. Schreier added that while introducing a new character and eliminating it might have been an option, it wouldn’t carry the same emotional impact or surprise factor as terminating Taskmaster.
Killing Off Taskmaster At The Start Of The Film Gave Thunderbolts* Stakes It Wouldn’t Have Otherwise
In a discussion, they mentioned that discussing Kurylenko’s character’s death in the movie wasn’t an easy conversation for them. According to reports, it was a challenging topic, but the actress from Paradox Effect seemed supportive of their idea, which they were deeply grateful for as she still agreed to be part of the project despite having limited screen time. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Schreier revealed that they contemplated various ways to eliminate Taskmaster and ultimately decided on an instant death. Although they wished to collaborate further with Kurylenko, expanding her screen time reportedly made it difficult for them to maintain the appropriate “tone” for her character’s demise. He admitted that the method of killing Taskmaster was somewhat ruthless.
It came as quite a surprise when Taskmaster perished in the movie, given that whispers about her fate had been circulating prior. Even though she was prominently featured on posters, it was keen-eyed spectators who spotted her diminished role once the trailer dropped. Her character was introduced in Black Widow, and since Thunderbolts is a collective of outcasts and villains, she fits the bill. However, many fans felt her demise squandered her potential, yet an unexpected death is still a shock no matter what.
