It’s no secret that previous live-action attempts at adapting Resident Evil have consistently disappointed fans. It often seems like Hollywood just can’t get it right when it comes to this franchise. But things might be different this time, with Zach Cregger now at the helm.
If you don’t know Zach Cregger, he began his career with the comedy group Whitest Kids U’Know. Now, he’s quickly become a standout director in the horror genre. It’s actually a common path – many successful horror directors, like Jordan Peele and the team behind Talk to Me (Danny and Michael Philippou), started out in comedy. While Peele or the Philippou brothers could have done a good job with a new Resident Evil movie, Zach Cregger is the perfect choice to direct it.
Zach Cregger’s Love for Resident Evil Combined With His Storytelling Talent is the Perfect Mix Needed to Make a Reboot Work
Director Johannes Roberts has spoken about his passion for the Resident Evil games, but also caused some debate by saying he won’t strictly follow the established storyline. In a recent interview with the New York Times, he explained that he’s aiming to create a story that feels true to the games’ atmosphere, rather than being completely faithful to the lore. This has understandably concerned some fans. While the series’ backstory is a beloved aspect for many, Roberts’ commitment to delivering an “authentic” experience that captures the spirit of Resident Evil is what truly matters.

No Franchise Characters is Actually a Good Thing
Director Craig Cregger has stated that the new Resident Evil movie won’t feature established characters like Jill and Leon. Instead, it will tell a completely original story with a new cast. This allows Cregger to delve into unexplored areas of the Resident Evil world, something that’s difficult when focusing on well-known characters. The reboot centers around Bryan, an ordinary medical courier, when the outbreak begins. Like Grace Ashcroft in Resident Evil: Requiem, Bryan isn’t a trained operative like Chris or Claire Redfield, which raises the tension and makes survival even more challenging.
It’s possible Cregger is pretending to mislead fans, perhaps to reveal a surprise character appearance later on, but we’ll have to wait and see if that’s the case.
Cregger Has Never Watched the Infamous Live-Action Resident Evil Movies
Love them or hate them, the Resident Evil movies directed by Paul W.S. Anderson are generally considered to be poorly made. Zach Cregger, however, hasn’t seen them, which is a good thing. This allows him to come up with fresh ideas for a new adaptation without being unintentionally influenced by Anderson’s films, and instead focus solely on the source material: the video games.
I’m not aiming to strictly follow the established game storylines. Instead, I want to create a story that captures the same feeling you get while playing the games – something that feels genuine to that experience.
He Knows How to Create a Compelling Villain and Write Sweat-Inducing Stories
I’m wondering if the new movie’s going to have a really classic villain like Albert Wesker. But honestly, the director, Cregger, already proved he can create a memorable bad guy with Aunt Gladys in his previous work, Weapons. She’s a bit different than what you’d expect from Resident Evil, for sure – way more over-the-top. But that kind of big personality is something a lot of the best Resident Evil villains actually had, so I’m not worried he can’t deliver!
Zach Cregger’s stories, like those in Weapons and Barbarian, are full of surprises, and that’s what makes his approach to the Resident Evil franchise so engaging. A new Resident Evil movie really needs that element of unpredictability. Adapting video games to film is tough, but if anyone can pull off a good live-action Resident Evil movie, it’s Cregger.
