In 2022, Tim Burton’s modern take on The Addams Family, titled “Wednesday”, premiered on Netflix and is anticipated for a Season 2. Burton directed the initial four episodes of the first season, establishing its distinctive style and ambiance. Now, he introduces a familiar face, actor Steve Buscemi, into this peculiar group. “Wednesday” marks the second time Burton and Buscemi have worked together, having previously collaborated in 2003 on the film “Big Fish”.
Buscemi’s knack for playing unusual characters with a witty, dark humor makes him an ideal choice for the peculiar, gloomy, and odd setting of the uncommon Nevermore. He faces a challenging task at the school of misfits, but it is where Enid Sinclair and Wednesday Addams step in, freshly transformed. This dynamic trio can unlock complex mysteries and confront the threats of the approaching season in Wednesday.
Steve Buscemi’s talent for playing oddball characters with a dark sense of humor is perfect for Nevermore’s mysterious, gothic environment. He has some big shoes to fill at the school of outcasts, but that’s where Enid Sinclair and Wednesday Addams come in. Together, they can unravel mysteries and tackle challenges in the upcoming season of Wednesday.
Who Is Wednesday Season 2’s New Nevermore Principal?

The tragic demise of Principal Larissa Weems significantly altered the course of events at Nevermore Academy. It was none other than science teacher Marilyn Thornhill, unmasked as Laurel Gates, who took her life by administering a lethal dose of Nightshade poison into Weems’ neck. Before Weems could respond, she succumbed, exhibiting signs of distress such as foaming at the mouth, in an excruciatingly painful death.
Beneath her cheerful and unsuspecting facade, Gates emerged as the architect of the Hyde murder spree, orchestrating Tyler Galpin’s activation of his Hyde powers and assuming the role of his Hyde master. In the series finale, she was taken down by the combined efforts of Eugene Ottinger and Wednesday, thus concluding her and Joseph Crackstone’s brief stint in the storyline. Although their influence was transient, Weems’ act of bravery to protect Nevermore will long be remembered.
The brutal, unjust killing of the respectable and virtuous Weems had a profound impact on Wednesday. Their frequent disagreements, along with the suddenness of Weems’ departure, intensified Wednesday’s sorrow and despair. Sharing a quiet moment in the now empty principal’s office, Wednesday and Enid honored a figure who held great power and influence.
Steve Buscemi As Barry Dort In Wednesday Season 2

With Weems gone, Christie is no longer on the “Wednesday” show, leaving an open spot for Buscemi’s character, Barry Dort. As the new principal of Nevermore, Dort stands to take on many roles, potentially serving as a helpful ally to Wednesday and Enid in overcoming future obstacles, or emulating Weems’ initial reluctance towards Wednesday, eventually warming up to her cause.
Initially, Weems was hesitant towards Wednesday, frequently urging her to avoid danger. However, their interactions were often contentious due to Wednesday disregarding both her warnings and general school rules. In the final episode of Wednesday, Weems successfully negotiated with Sheriff Galpin to dismiss Tyler’s kidnapping charges by expelling Wednesday from Nevermore Academy immediately. Nevertheless, away from the cameras, Wednesday persuaded Weems to covertly aid in exposing Thornhill’s secrets. When Wednesday eventually shared her suspicions with Weems, they joined forces to uncover a larger truth.
In the approaching school year, it’s expected that Wednesday, with her knack for solving mysteries, will land in tricky situations. This predicament could provide an interesting twist for Principal Dort as the head of Nevermore Academy, enabling him to approach his role differently. Given Wednesday’s status as a problem-solver at Nevermore, her observations are likely to catch his attention. Once an expelled student from Nancy Reagan High School, Wednesday is now a renowned hero at Nevermore. Despite not being particularly fond of students, Principal Dort should still respect Wednesday due to her past and present achievements.
On Wednesdays, we’ve observed impressive critical thinking skills and analytical prowess, but there seems to be a challenge in her communication style. What she could benefit from is an understanding leader who is open to her ideas from the start. Previously, Wednesday confessed to Weems that she had not only been reluctant but also uncooperative towards him. However, all she received in response were labels such as “impatient” and “impulsive.
The A-team: Dort, Wednesday And Enid
For Dort, taking over from Weems, the pressure will stem from the turmoil and strife of the last semester. He steps into a school on the verge of collapse and students who are still dealing with the double tragedies of Thornhill and Crackstone. In this challenging situation, he needs to demonstrate honesty, wisdom, and emotional maturity. Additionally, it would be beneficial for him to maintain a close relationship with the top students, Wednesday, Eugene, and Enid.
On Wednesday and Enid having proven their abilities, it falls to Dort now to reveal his. Given actor Buscemi’s talent for quirky roles, Dort could become Nevermore’s peculiar jester – a departure from Weems’ strong leadership, but staying true to the series’ pattern of featuring unconventional characters. He will rely heavily on Wednesday and Enid as his navigational beacon during Season 2’s trials.
In their shared past at Nevermore, Weems was Morticia Addams’ roommate and had a close relationship with Wednesday’s parents. This bond enabled Weems to recognize that Wednesday was experiencing visions, such as the instance when they passed a driver with a fractured neck. By using this narrative technique for Principal Dort and possibly Enid, we can introduce an additional dimension to the world of Wednesday, helping new character Dort forge a link with an existing one – let’s say, Enid. This connection will not only enrich the story but also create a sense of familiarity for the audience.
I’m crossing my fingers that Barry will seamlessly fit into the storyline of Season 2, given that the series is dedicated to delving deeper into the mythology of the Addams Family.
Wednesday Season 2 arrives on Netflix in 2025.
