In the second season of “Wind Breaker,” the narrative commences with an unexpected clash between the novice students at Furin High School and a notorious group known as Keel. The question arises: Who is this minor character, and why does Sakura Haruka become entangled in his affairs?

In the final season of “Wind Breaker”, Haruka Sakura emerged as one of the captains among the first-year students, but found it challenging to grasp his responsibilities. Meanwhile, Anzai, his fellow student, grappled with a more significant issue concerning Keel. This new gang, on the rise, was notorious due to their immoral deeds, even surpassing the infamous Shishitoren (Lion Head). Now, it falls upon Haruka and the rest of the class to assist Anzai in resolving his predicament urgently.

Unlike Bofurin, Keel is teeming with troublemakers who bring hardship to others. These individuals often resort to theft, bully one person, and engage in physical fights among themselves for amusement and diversion. However, amidst these delinquents, there’s Atsushi Nagato, a gentle and wise young man, who aspires to strengthen himself to safeguard the innocent and hopefully rekindle his old friendship with Masaki Anzai.

In essence, Nagato shares some characteristics with Akihiko Nirei from Furin High, as they’re not typically strong in combat or fighting skills compared to their peers. Yet, both desire to grow stronger and fight alongside their friends. However, while Bofurin is kind to Nirei, Keel treats Nagato harshly, often mistreating him much like the rest of his weakling associates.

Nagato Finds It Difficult to Leave Keel

Joining Keel is a breeze, yet leaving it without facing repercussions seems nearly unattainable. Once Nagato realizes that Keel isn’t the group he initially believed, he finds it challenging to lead a typical life. With the need to fulfill the gang’s expectations, he resorts to committing harmful acts for others, merely to meet his quota and dodge physical abuse from fellow members. However, Nagato is not the kind of person who can easily exploit others, so he consistently becomes the target of their aggression.

Nagato’s Connection With Bofurin

Nagato Is Friends With Masaki Anzai

Fortunately, Nagato boasts a steadfast ally hailing from Bofurin who’s prepared to rescue him against Keel at any price. They go way back to childhood, as Nagato is friends with Anzai, a student in Furin’s first year class. Despite their long-standing bond, Nagato hesitates to ask for Anzai’s aid due to concern that it might endanger him too. However, Anzai insists on lending a hand to Nagato, demonstrating the depth of their friendship.

The issue lies in Nagato’s belief that his past actions disqualify him from salvation. Despite this, Anzai remains determined to save Nagato from Keel, and if necessary, he will do it alone. This is because Anzai made a commitment to their friend Mio that things would work out, and that he himself would be okay. It’s fortunate that Haruka is astute enough to recognize Anzai’s concern about Nagato, which has led Bofurin to become involved.

The First Challenge for the New Captain

Haruka promptly stepped in without a moment’s thought to aid Anzai in retrieving Nagato from Keel. Similarly, classmates like Nirei, Suo, Kiryu, Tsugeura, and even Sugishita joined him. Together with the rest of their class, they ventured to an old shipyard to confront Keel at their headquarters. They were confident that they could manage this small-scale gang on their own. However, upon arrival, they discovered that Keel had amassed a large number of members, armed with various weapons ranging from metal pipes to bats, ready to use them against Furin unexpectedly.

Observing from a distance, it was clear that Haruka’s group was struggling against Keel’s vast arsenal. The tide seemed to be turning against them as they were on the brink of defeat. But just when hope appeared to be fading, Kaji Ren and his second-year comrades swooped in, tipping the scales back in favor of Haruka’s group. It didn’t take long for Furin to assert dominance over Keel’s members, knocking each one down. And that’s when Anzai stepped forward to confront Nagato, revisiting everything that transpired between them.

In the story “Wind Breaker,” Nagato might not seem prominent, but his actions in the Keel arc carry weight. It’s Nagato who sets off the conflict between Keel and Furin, and if he weren’t around, Haruka would have missed out on a crucial team-building experience early in his tenure as grade captain. At first, Haruka aspired to lead like Umemiya and Kaji, but later understood that their bond could be strengthened by everyone contributing rather than striving for leadership alone. Instead of being a leader like Umemiya and Kaji, Haruka learned that it was more important to do whatever he could for the group, as they were all there to back each other up.
