Summary
- Nico faces potential disaster foreseen by her mother, a witch specializing in prophecies.
- Episode 3 reveals more about Nico’s romantic interest and reliance on magic in daily life.
- Unique draft version of the opening sequence delights fans with a touch of comedic magic.
‘Witch Watch’ stands out as one of the top-tier animes currently airing. Although it’s not a secret title since it can be found across various streaming services, it unfortunately isn’t getting the attention and acclaim that it truly merits.
Studio Bibury skillfully combines humorous manga style with captivating animation. In Episode 3, we began to unravel a bit more of the story’s plot, which appears to follow an episodic structure, potentially hinting at a larger tale unfolding.
Boy, Girl, Magic And Fashion
At the outset of this episode, there’s further exploration of the budding relationship between Nico and myself. She continues to strive to win his affection, hoping it might blossom into a romance someday. However, Moi isn’t your typical guy. In fact, we discover that he has an eccentric taste in fashion and has a fondness for ancient European attire.
In another aspect, there’s an engaging piece involving hints of romance, yet it remains unclear whether Moi will reciprocate romantic sentiments towards Nico, given his intense preoccupation with ensuring her safety from peril.
The episode clearly demonstrates the extent to which Nico depends on magic for daily tasks, including clothing choices and ordinary chores, as well as the potential issues this might cause. To put it simply, we discovered numerous spells suitable for everyday situations, but the idea of the “Pulp Fashion” spell is undeniably amusing.
We continue to encounter numerous nods to various anime shows such as “Hunter x Hunter”, “Golgo 13”, and “Kochikame”.
Disaster Will Befall Nico, Or Something Like That
In this episode, we got a better look at Nico’s mom, specifically Ibuki Wakatsuki. As for her dad, there’s still no information available, though the narrative could choose to leave that detail out without much impact.
Currently, Ibuki resides in the village known as Yuzenkyo, which is where Nico underwent training. As she explains, this locale transformed into a new sanctuary or hub for witches following their migration to Japan, as many witch-hunting activities began in numerous other countries.
Ibuki, skilled in divination magic, is in fact striving to uncover additional insights about the foretold catastrophe concerning her daughter. She reveals that due to the complexities of prophetic revelations, she requires a substantial amount of magical energy to obtain precise information, which is why she remains in Yuzenkyo.
Although it may appear as a small detail, certain scenes and information provided imply that Ibuki’s proficiency in prophetic magic might not be as strong as expected. Given her daughter’s character, it’s plausible to assume that she could be somewhat inept at times. Consequently, the prophecy we know about might turn out to be quite different from what eventually transpires.
In summary, Ibuki recently foretold a catastrophe connected to dogs and rain showers. The current episode has instances involving dogs and rain, but it remains unclear whether this prophecy refers to these occurrences (further clarification may come in the upcoming episode).
“Unfinished” Opening Sequence

This week’s introductory scene deviated slightly from its typical format. Instead, an early or preliminary version of the usual opening sequence was broadcasted, a treat for fans of animation production, particularly those who appreciate the art of sakuga.
In a rather intriguing twist, it appears that certain fans seemed to relish the idea that Nico intentionally bungled the opening with her magic, finding it oddly captivating.
What’s Next For Witch Watch?
Towards the conclusion of the episode, a new character was presented – Kanshi Kazamatsuri, who serves as Nico’s familiar in the form of a crow. Much like Morihito, his role is to safeguard her.
In the earlier days, while Nico was honing her skills as a witch, Kanshi resided in Yuzenkyo or its vicinity – this is something we’ll delve deeper into during the upcoming Episode 4, as hinted by the episode’s preview.
Witch Watch is available to stream on Netflix, Crunchyroll and Hulu.
