As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that CD Projekt Red’s approach to romance in The Witcher 4 is a breath of fresh air. Having played through multiple iterations of the series and countless other games, I’ve grown tired of the ‘romance for the sake of having romance’ trope.
The Witcher series has never shied away from offering romance options, but these relationships are often fleeting and serve more as a brief respite from the action rather than a deep emotional connection. In The Witcher 3 (released in 2015), players were typically presented with two main romantic choices (Option A vs. Option B) and given a few secondary, less significant flings for variety.
In The Witcher 4, it’s guaranteed that CDPR will do away with romantic elements solely for the purpose of including them. Instead, they aim to create more organic and meaningful romantic relationships within the game.
True Love
During The Game Awards last week, CD Projekt Red unveiled plans for The Witcher 4. In a captivating six-minute trailer, they showcased Ciri as the central character, instead of Geralt of Rivia. Fans well-versed in the series’ lore will recognize that this decision aligns perfectly with the natural progression for the Witcher games.
In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the player has the opportunity to develop romantic relationships with several characters, with the most significant choice coming down to whether they will choose Yennefer or Triss in the end. Additionally, even though she is primarily a supporting character in The Wild Hunt, Ciri also briefly explores a romantic connection.
In The Witcher 4, we won’t be casually adding romantic elements just to check a box on our list.
Recently, The Witcher 4’s game director, Sebastian Kalemba, discussed their focus on relationship-building aspects in the upcoming game during a recent interview.
Creating games is inherent to our nature, it’s just one of those ordinary things humans do. I believe without this aspect, we might not be able to fully convey the whole narrative.
We aim to give it significant focus, making it captivating and impactful. It’s not about creating romance merely for the sake of it; that doesn’t align with our approach at CDPR.
In Cyberpunk 2077 by CDPR, building a relationship with the various options takes numerous hours of gameplay across multiple missions. This process is integrated within the game’s decision-making structure, and aspects as subtle as character dialogue in love-themed messages significantly impact it.
We recently learned that The Witcher 4 will have ‘around the same-sized map’ as The Witcher 3.
