With Sniper Elite: Resistance, Rebellion is Catering to All Playstyles

As a seasoned fan of the Sniper Elite series, I can confidently say that each installment has always been a testament to player freedom and creativity. While the long-range shooting mechanics and X-ray kill cam are undeniably captivating, it’s the diverse approaches to gameplay that truly set these games apart. The upcoming Sniper Elite: Resistance seems to be more than just a side story; it’s a celebration of the series’ roots, promising a return of beloved features and a commitment to catering to a wide range of playstyles.

Essentially, the Sniper Elite series has consistently emphasized player creativity since its inception. Contrary to what one might initially assume, there are numerous effective strategies for navigating the stealth environments of each Sniper Elite game, although the precision long-range shooting mechanics and the distinctive X-ray kill cam are certainly the main attractions. The upcoming Sniper Elite: Resistance is not simply a spin-off to 2022’s Sniper Elite 5; it’s a standalone experience that reintroduces beloved features from previous installments, while also striving for a gameplay flexibility that could appeal to those who have been fans of the series from afar.

Recently, Game Rant got to try a preview version of Sniper Elite: Resistance and talk with its lead level designer from Rebellion Developments, Beck Shaw. From our hands-on experience with the game and our chat with the developers, it’s clear that Sniper Elite: Resistance is designed to accommodate various playstyles. Whether you prefer a run-and-gun approach or stealthy tactics, both methods are enjoyable and rewarding in this game. By focusing on entertainment and player creativity, Sniper Elite: Resistance is looking like an accessible yet challenging stealth action game.

Rebellion Tried to Keep All Playstyles in Mind for Sniper Elite: Resistance’s Levels

Regardless if playing stealthily or aggressively, the Sniper Elite series has consistently prioritized enjoyable gunplay and fun across all its titles within the lengthy World War II franchise. Particularly, Sniper Elite 4 stood out as a significant milestone, attracting many newcomers to the series. Notably, Sniper Elite 4 showcased intricate and diverse semi-open world stealth environments that allowed players considerable freedom in strategizing their approach to each mission’s goals, catering to both ends of the stealth action spectrum effectively.

In continuation with the series’ progression, Sniper Elite 5 brings back aspects such as weapon customization and increased chances for player creativity within levels, a feature that the team at Rebellion intends to transfer into Sniper Elite: Resistance. According to lead level designer Beck Shaw, creating the semi-open stealth environments found in each mission of Sniper Elite: Resistance is quite difficult, yet it presents an appealing challenge that the team finds rewarding to overcome.

“We just need to ensure that each objective or POI kind of caters to a different player style…Ensure there are high points there for sniping or open avenues so they can see a long way to get some of that sniping in there. Ensuring things like pickups are there, so they’ve got ammo if they do get stuck in the pinch…It’s an interesting challenge, and there are a lot of different things we need to keep in mind with all the different play styles. But we do try to take care to cater to all play styles where we can.”

In addition to the unique layouts of the game levels, the return of weapon customization in Sniper Elite 5 (which was missing in Sniper Elite 4) is a notable feature in Resistance. This allows players to explore various gaming styles by tinkering with their weapons. As Beck puts it, the team’s motivation for emphasizing this aspect in Resistance stems from the understanding that “Many players enjoy tweaking their weapon customization, either to suit their preferred playstyle or to try something entirely new.
