With Superman’s DCU Debut Imminent, Now’s the Time For Injustice 3

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the prospect of an Injustice 3 release is music to my ears (or should I say, thumbs?). It’s been far too long since we last danced with the DC universe in this unique fighting game franchise. The last entry, Injustice 2, was a fantastic blend of combat, storytelling, and lore that kept me hooked for hours on end.

The concept of “Injustice” has lain dormant for quite some time, with the latest installment in the series being released back in January 2017. After nearly eight years without any updates, one might start to question whether “Injustice” still has a place in the future. The situation isn’t made easier by the fact that the past few years have been challenging for the DC brand as a whole.

Although it was just the second game in the series, Injustice 2 built up a significant fanbase. Given its many appealing features, the absence of a new installment in the fighting game community has sparked some confusion. Granted, NetherRealm Studios is busy with Mortal Kombat, but there’s no indication that they have given up on Injustice 3. In fact, with the start of the DCU marked by Creature Commandos and the ramp-up of Superman, now could be an ideal moment for announcing and launching Injustice 3.

Injustice 3 Could Be Perfect Cross-Promotion for the DCU’s Superman

The “Injustice” series, comprising just two games, offers a rich world for fans to delve into, largely due to an extensive comic book series that was launched alongside each game. It’s plausible that if there is an “Injustice 3”, it would also come with its own comic series, which could help solidify its place within the upcoming DC Universe (DCU). DCU leaders have hinted at integrating canon video games into the universe’s development, and this suggestion places “Injustice” as a strong contender given its prominent position among DC video games. However, it’s worth pondering if such a connection between “Injustice” and the DCU would be as mutually advantageous as it appears.

Given that the DCU (DC Universe) features an Elseworlds segment for movies set in alternate realities, it might be most straightforward to classify _Injustice 3_ as an Elseworlds production.

The DCU is Ushering In a New Era

The term DCU refers to the current branding of DC Comics’ new endeavor to create a cinematic universe on screen. In previous attempts, DC has encountered some significant setbacks when it comes to movie production. However, there are notable exceptions that managed to shine despite these challenges. With James Gunn now in charge, the DCU aims to rectify the issues stemming from disorganization within the DCEU (DC Extended Universe).

James Gunn has been at the helm of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy, also directing “The Suicide Squad” and the upcoming series “Peacemaker”. His work on Marvel Studios’ popular comic book movies has earned him the title of a forward-thinking director for such projects. The DC Universe is gearing up for the launch of “Superman” in July 2025, a crucial film that could determine the future of the universe as a whole.

Why Injustice 3 Directly Connecting to the DCU is Highly Unlikely

To ensure the DCU thrives, it must maintain a favorable image for its characters among the public. Notably, the wide appeal of the Injustice series could boost this reputation. Yet, the greatest asset of this potential link could also be its liability: both universes revolving around Superman.

In an imaginary scenario, Superman transforms into a tyrannical ruler who oppresses the world with a tight grip. This stands in stark contrast to the hopeful image of Superman portrayed by David Corenswet and the optimism that James Gunn aims to convey in the DC Universe as a whole. In fact, the tone of “Injustice” might remind some fans of the grim atmosphere they encountered during the early days of the DCEU, when that universe was under heavy criticism.

Why Injustice Still Deserves Another Chance

Instead of making Injustice appear incongruous with the future tone of the DCU, a revival of this franchise could prove equally captivating. If Superman in the DCU embodies the enduring optimism that defines him, presenting this contrast with his antithesis could underscore this aspect even more effectively. Continuing the Injustice storyline would cater to fans who appreciated the brooding, intense Superman hinted at in Batman vs. Superman. Conversely, those who favor a more traditional Superman portrayal will soon witness an on-screen adaptation that stays true to his character. By launching Injustice 3 and a new Superman movie around the same time, both versions of this iconic hero, starkly different from each other, would be showcased. This approach demonstrates the multifaceted nature of the Man of Steel and allows DC to enjoy the best of both worlds.
